I have seen a chicken frozen to the ground. I think she got stepped on by my milk cow and laid there all night. When it rained on her feathers they froze to the ground. I cut her wing feathers loose with my pocket knife and took her to the house. She laid up under the wood cook stove for a couple of hours. She finally limped out. We filled her up with corn bread and put her back in the hen house. She limped for a couple of weeks, but was fine by spring.
Hope you haven't floated away today with all this rain we got - I would almost rather see snow than rain at this point, SO tired of sloshing through the muck to get to/from the barn. This darn Indiana clay makes for some nasty, boot sucking mud (I threw a shoe today, lol, made for one wet, COLD foot because I was already committed to the step when I realized my boot wasn't there anymore).
We've had the worst rain today, too. Earlier in the week I took all the tin from my run so the sand could get some sunshine and dry out. BIG MISTAKE. All the feeders are flooded, inches of standing water everywhere. I put feed on the porch so they could stay dry and saw one of my layers with bloody vent feathers. I brought her in and realized she was basically oozing lice. Her whole bottom was just black with congealed blood. So I soaked her in warm water and lathered her with dish soap; I washed, rinsed, and drained the water three times. Then I got the blow dryer and fluffed her up, and the lice were STILL falling off. I feel like absolutely the worst chicken mom ever.
I'm letting her stay in overnight, and in the morning I'm going to dust her good. The others are too wet, and I don't know what to do about them.![]()
