My dad uses one of those oil filled radiator heaters (portable on wheels). Says it hasn't raised his electric bill much and is good because it's safe, quiet, and doesn't dry out the air. Also can be used for a particular room, so cheaper for him than using propane for central heating the whole house. He uses it in the bedroom at the end of the house where the wood stove heat can't reach. Of course here we call it cold if it's under 60º and freezing is anything below 40º.

I have heard those are good. 40 would be a heat wave !!! I would go out without a coat .

A Hatching and Brooding book? haha! He just gave you complete approval to hatch as many chicks as you want!

Wonder if that hawk was suffering from the cold. Tougher to find food, and if it's eating road kill it sounds desperate, and didn't want to share with you.

I know, but I do have to wear socks with my flip-flops. There are some serious drawbacks to living here, drought being the biggest thing now, but we can't complain about the weather. Well, we shouldn't complain, but we do anyway.

the last egg i said was bad is pipped this morning. so 4 out of 5. they are mean. my eye sight is obviously gone. it is a white egg too. first time for me for a day 22 hatch. I thonk it is this bitter cold. It must of warmed up a little, it is snowing. it was way too cold to snow. supposed to go shopping today . nope, just seen the weather, still bitter. snow stopped anyway just now. LOL
Glad to hear that another one pipped for you. It has been bitter cold again today, but at least the wind slowed down. We had 40 t0 50 mile an hour winds last night with lake effect snow. I was really fortunate that my grown daughter who lives in a little studio apartment behind our house didn't have to work today, so she snowblowed everything out for me. It takes me twice as long to do the chores with these freezing temps. just cleaning the coop & poop board everyday is difficult when 26 adult birds don't want to go out in their run. On top of that they trip me trying to get the snow off my boots. Darn birds, why do I love them anyways, lol. Then I have the 18 babies in a brooder box that needs to be cleaned twice a day. They at least have a warm coop that I can work in. Nothing but eating & pooping. A whole bunch of them were chest bumping out there when I was cleaning the brooder box. I hope to God that all of them that are doing it aren't roosters or I'm in deep poo-poo. Trying to brood a flock of 12 girls for my brother-in-law. I have a feeling at least 3 are roo's because they seem to take delight in pecking me or pinching down with their beeks when I reach into the brooder box. They may be little but them pinching the inside of your arm still hurts.

thats what i thought too. on both counts hahaa, I dont ask permission from anyone including my husband to do things that directly involve me. My mother raised very stubborn self reliable daughters. she taught us at a very young age to neither ask nor expect anything from any one except ourselfs. flip flops w/socks. hahaa I just feel so sorry for you. LOL I am surprised they dont melt on the cement.

Lady, I love my little ones but not enough to clean them twice a day ! that must be a very clean place. I bought a 3 1/2 gallon water today and put it on my cookie tin heater. gave them a TON of food and dont expect to have to even go out there but every couple days. at least til this weather breaks. The mixed bantams i am talking about. I will still go to the other coop every day to gather my frozen eggs so i can feed them to the cats or let the dogs play ball with them. The swedish flower roo is tons better now. eating good. havent felt to see his weight , sure that will take a while but when the weather breaks i will let him rejoin his ladies. good ending there for a change.

Granny, has your Swedish Flower rooster got his eyesight back? I've never heard of anything like that, wonder what it could have been? Maybe his problem could have been a lack of eye-beak coordination rather than an eye only problem? Glad he's getting better.

yes, he does have it back, he pecks where he aims now

bad chicky ! He is mad at me i suppose. he really is a very gentle rooster. his eyes were swelled so i would think he just wasnt seeing well. I had seen that once before. In spazz he did the same thing and that leads me to think they starved / he starved. I am very happy this one didnt follow the same path as spazz. not sure when i should let him return to the flock . I am in no hurry but i dont want him to have to reestablish his place as head roo. It may already be too late for that. the hawk, something was wrong and the cold was my first guess. it being in the city and the ground so frozen, it probably was starving. I could of touched it had i wanted and i wanted but decided i better not. could of found a place for my unwanted roosters. hahaa the last chick is still being stubborn. I may have to step in. as it is now the others have wing feathers already and are going to peck it. funny how some are born so sweet and others come out looking for trouble. Still very cold but i am taking at least the older pr. of seramas out tomorrow. what a mess. the new ones dont seem to act right. they are doing ok but not active at all. none of them like that wire on their feet. it will soon be day 23 on this last chick. put in on the morning of the 18th of December. all the eggs are the same breed, chick, size, ect...cold spot in the incubator ? the last batch are all the same day so i think i will put this bator away and use the one they are in to do the whole hatch. then i will be done ! (for now)

Last chick out . I did an assist. it was too big to hatch. cant believe that half grown chick came from that shell ! pin feathers on wings too
