OMG I cant believe im doing this Red so pay close attention. under my breast it is 99 degrees. find a fat fold dont put the egg there it will suffocate. use that as a guide of how warm they should be and compare it to the light.

Red, do you have an outdoor thermometer? Any will work, momma may have not been trying to eat it. What has happened is the chick was malpositioned so it pipped in the bottom of the egg. Momma was saving it by breaking a pip hole for it to breath. If it was me I would take it back.out to momma keeping it cupped in your hand so she can't see it & put it under her from behind. This chick will be in distress because it pipped the wrong end. Then sit there & watch momma. Now that it can breath momma may not bother it. I don't know what other advice to give you. Its critical for it to have the correct temp & humidity right now. Usually a chick pips then rest up to 24 hours, absorbing the yolk. Its important that you wait for that yolk to absorb.

Granny, I know someone who hatched a chick in her bra! Got shell bits all over!

This s a simple set up for an incubator. Glass pie dish over a glass bowl. It will help keep your temps more stable and humidity up if you can rig up something similar. If you get a thermometer, place it inside next to the eggs.

This person found a duck egg on her porch and incubated it to successful hatching. Very neat story. I will return with the link.

No thermometer. I'm having to wing it. No blood. Its chirping at me. Oh I hope I can save it

you can use a little 1/2 cup of luke warm water and a human thermometer get the water to estimate 99 degrees and try to set the lamp and with the water/thermo near the egg and keep it around the same temps.

EDIT to add, if you have an ear thermo, that may be better, get the egg temp right off the outside of the egg and see what temp it is, you have to work with what you have its better than nothing!
