I would like some with crests! To go with my vicarious yaks.

Wonder if there are other sources?

You are looking for high egg production first, and good eating second, right? White eggs and red birds are nonstarters.
Assuming cold hardy is a bonus.

What breeds do you have now? Are you going to hatch your own or will you need to buy replacements every couple years?

hoping to hatch or have them hatch their own. I Thought brahma's at first and truly love them but they are just not cost efficient. Trying SLW and they are nice for the freezer but taking for ever to give me a large egg. I also have australorps and they do very well indeed but what a pain to pluck !!!!!! Love the easter eggers and will always have some of them. Even tho they are taking their sweet time getting back after the molt. I have some cinnamon queens. Lovely dark eggs and large or better very fast, BUT a hybrid so no breeding of them. I may have to go red

The other problem with brahmas is they are very slow to lay and the hatchery seems to have issues in sexing them always get roosters when just ordering pullets. But I personaly just love the feathers feet and these guy sure like to play in the water/mud. VERY tame if a bit lazy.

man they are all over the place as far as egg laying numbers from 150 to almost 300 eggs per year. Now I don't know. 150 is NOT acceptable for me.
Thing about that is the 300 per year birds are generally hybrids, which I thought you didn't want, and they tend to burn out early. The 300 number, if it's true, only lasts for the first year or so. If you have a hen producing well for 4 years while laying fewer eggs per year, you will get more eggs out of her than the flash ones that quit after their second season. Also consider your turnover rate. Is it better/more economical to raise new chicks every couple of years, or go for longer production per bird?

Mmmm.... turnovers... Cherry please. You'd think I wouldn't be hungry after eating for 3 days straight!
