Dally, I agree on helping chivks out. I never help chicks hatch, if they can't hatch they are weak. No time for that here!

In areas where humidity is high "dry hatching" is very possible. Here in SC I had it figured out. And it worked like a charm. But, I agree, dry hatch is a crappy name for the method.
 
enola, last night, just for giggle, since I already had the bator up to temp, I threw the hygrometer in.

no water in the trays, and got a 33% reading for the hour or so I left it in. this was with both top plugs pulled out.

and that hygro is calibrated? thats a good start number for sure

something about envisioning you giggle made me laugh. you dont giggle you snicker, grin or bust out
 
oh and no, this was before the calibration. but surely it is close to being accurate? I'll find out tonight.
