My heritage RIR roo is four months. He's so big I didn't realize how young he was, but I went back and found his hatch date. I guess that's a little young yet?

He should be getting randy soon! Do you have hens of his age? Older hens may check him until he learns manners!

There are two pullets his age. He's the only roo right now, and a few nights ago he made himself at home in the big girl coop. I don't mind if he learns manners first.

How old do y'all think a roo needs to be before he starts fulfilling his roles in the flock?

According to SpeckeldHen, 4-6 months is when she starts seeing fertile eggs. Doing the deed and fulfilling his role are not necessarily the same thing. They can start mating sooner, but fertility is questionable.

He's the only roo out in the flock right now, so plenty of hens. There's a second roo inside for another week, but I think there are still plenty of hens? I need to count, because after selling and losing I can't remember my headcount.

I feel the same about catahoulas. I've never had one, but I've been fascinated with them since around 1998. I took "Louisiana history" and learned they're the state dog. They've been wedged in my brain ever since.

My next pup will be a catahoula or mix. I keep prowling through petfinder, and tonight I found a catahoula/weimaraner mix.
