Well no wonder. Do you have a 2x4 you could put up for them? Flat side up.
It is instinct for them to roost at night. Only a crazy broody will be happy sleeping on the ground.

the nesting boxes stretch the whole length of the coop and are covered with plywood. they could sleep there. Instead they are using that for a jumping point to the rafters.
 
Crap, a day late & a dollar short again. Sure hate that these farking pages don't update until you leave the page. Sure would save me a lot of typing grr.....
 
Standing on plywood is like standing on the ground. They want to roost. They would get used to a lower roost and would probably choose it over the trouble of going so high. A 2x4 or a long branch... save the trouble and expense of blocking off the rafters.
 
just looked out the window and my truck is covered in snow/frozen snow.

Twist glad to hear you eye is doing a bit better. At least whatever was in it is out. The irritation & swelling will subside in a couple of days I'm sure, unless you scratch the cornea & infection sets in.
