katbriar, that is what he said, these are his words, not mine. i would not take my chickens to a swap and knowingly pass this on to someone. i know thats where it came from though. i am going to keep a closed flock . if these meds dont work, i will cull. i still havent checked on the denaguard but if it is too much to treat this many chickens monthly i will still cull and just keep favorites. no buying , selling, or hatching for me. if they hatch some without my knowledge , (sometimes thats not hard to do) then i am not sure . i may lose all the roosters and only keep the hens .so no worries on more. he said even all the hatcheries have it. the only way is through nippa and mg certified hatcheries and even then you can pick it up from just about anywhere. he did diagnosis over the phone. said thats all he needed . he is a professor and vet. at purdue u.

eggsessive, suzierd, i went looking last night on info for this and ran across a post where both of you were trying to help someone else. so, i realize this must of been tiresome for you. i also know your recommendation. i do want to thank you both for taking time to lead me through this. i may yet do the deed. i have to think long and hard on that. do you believe or agree with what this dr. is telling me? about it being so widespread? it would kill me to cull only to buy more with the same problems. he said they will build immunity and that is why some have it bad and others not at all. symptom wise .

Good to hear about your talk with the Purdue professor. Here is the link for Denagard at TwinCitiesPoultry.com that includes directions, and they also sell it at QCSupply.com:

Poultry diseases
Mycoplasmas are major disease-causing organisms in poultry, which can be transmitted in the air or sexually and they are one of the major causes of production loss around the world. The risk of infection is higher under modern intensive systems of production.

In chickens and turkeys mycoplasmas can cause a wide range of disease signs from respiratory problems and lameness through to increased embryo mortality, infertility and reproductive problems.
Denagard has proved to have exceptional activity against mycoplasmas and is therefore used worldwide to help produce healthy and productive chicks and to control disease transmission. It can also be used in laying birds to improve egg production.
Denagard – flexible and effective
Denagard has proved to be highly effective against key poultry disease challenges for over 25 years and in more than 50 countries across the world. It is a valuable ally for farming professionals in their ongoing battle against disease.
In acute disease cases chickens may be off their feed but since Denagard can be administered both in feed, in water, it can be used to treat most types of disease challenge.
Its rapid absorption into an animal or bird's affected tissues at high concentrations means that it is quickly effective. In spite of its many years of practical use it is still a successful therapy with little evidence of increased resistance amongst the pig and poultry disease-causing organisms.

Denagard – a safe and prudent choice

Denagard has been developed exclusively for use in animal health. This means that, unlike some other pig and poultry antibiotics, it is not related to or identical to those antibiotics used in human medicine and cannot, therefore, select for cross resistance with human medicinal products. This is an increasingly important benefit given current concerns regarding antibiotic use and the safeguarding of public health.
Also, there are no known adverse environmental consequences following the use of Denagard. It bio-degrades rapidly and has shown no known effect on soil biology or plant growth. It is non-toxic to fish, and has been shown to be non-mutagenic, non-carcinogenic and non-teratogenic.

it controls transmission? i cant do the math eggsessive. 3 gallons of water a day, 41/2 teaspoons a day for 3-5 days? as a preventive? say15 teaspoons a month . how long would a bottle last? not long i am guessing

By treating with the minimum 3 days a month, it says it makes 134 gallons, so 134 divided by 3 gallons is 43 gallons divided by 3 days a month is 14months.
By treating for 5 days a month, you have 134 gallons divided by 3 gallons equals 43 gallons divided by 5 days a month equals 8.5 months. Any math whizs out there can check my math.

Another way is:
Preventative Dose is
8 ml X 3 gallons equals 24 ml X 3 days a month equals 72 ml a month.
1000 ml divided by 72 ml equals 13. 2 months

Treatment dose is
16 ml X 3 gallons equals 48 ml X 3 days equals 144 ml, so 1000ml divided by 144 is 6.9 months I think.

I'm too old to do math anymore. My head hurts.

I've never used Denagard, but someone knowledgeable here once said that you should use the treatment dose first, and then after that do the prevention dose each month.

i am going to do the tylan, if it ever gets here and then i will order the denaguard. (if i can sweet talk someone again) and use it for the preventive. 50 dollars a yr. so to speak isnt bad. more or less. not for the company they give me. i am very proud of my chickens and i make everyone that comes here go look at them. lol the nurses are the funniest. they can dress wounds but let em smell a little chicken poo and they turn a pretty green color. lol i really need to get me a credit card and learn how to use it wisely.
