the chickens in the coop has been killing them as they start to pip or soon after. there were 2 hatched and one almost all the way out so i pulled them. i finished the hatch. it was fine. one was still wet. i didnt have my bator up so i put them in the brooder and put a towel down like a nest and put them under the heat.i also inclosed a 8x8in. square so they wouldnt wander or roll to far away.i checked on them a couple times then went shopping. when i returned all 3 were dead.i have 2 more that are healthy in the same brooder but different days of hatch. i wonder if i cooked them? their little bodys were pretty warm. guess i will find out wednesday if i have surgery on my foot or not. they may all go that way. i am keeping my hopes up they dont have to. i am not wanting more babys, i just plain and simple havent been doing my job by getting rid of the eggs before they start sitting. my breg boot is the worse !! hate wearing it and dont most of the time.

Granny I think you need to introduce some birth control in your coop. Either throw all your roosters in a big pen and call it a batchelor pad......... or get someone to build you some roll away nests so those hens can't continue to set on all those eggs!

I don't keep broody type hens for this very reason.

I sure hope your doctors can figure out what the best treatment is for your foot........ On the first go round!

You sure have had a rough life this summer!

will the roos start fighting? they dont now but i have a ton of hens to go around . i dont know how many roos i have and some i dont sex of. if i can get some help i will do that. my foot hurts pretty bad

i would rather have the roll nests because thats all they want to do is sit. i know those are money. plus i had a young cochin sitting in the floor ! i thought she was sick. LOL she hasnt even started laying yet but she hatched a baby any way

If you have a pen somewhere that keeps the roosters from seeing the hens it might work. I have lots of roosts in my bachelor pen so the roosters can get away from each other. I put lots of feeders in the pens. Some on roosts, some on the floor to make sure all the roosters can eat all they want. And several waterers also.

It might seem like more work, but your hens will be happier and you won't have any more heartaches from accidental hatches going wrong.

it is divided by chicken wire but it will be a big place . i will try and see. i hate throwing eggs that i know they have been sitting for a week and not doing my job by gathering every day

Sometimes we can only do the best we can. Sometimes that may not be the best thing........ That is when you start compromising and working smarter.......

Keep posting, working together, we can all try to help you!

Now, somebody try to figure out how to fix a predatory dog problem with out ticking off the neighbors or killing every dog in the neighborhood...............

thank you enola, i am a bad chicken mama lately. it is my fault in the sense that if i cant care for them proper ,i shouldnt have them. i just keep telling myself it is temporary. NOW, whos dog? yours or neighbors? did you explain to neighbor it is bothering you?
