sounds like you got the hook-up. i have never been to a chicken auction before. bet they are fun. Is that where the pox came from?

They're super fun. Our favorite, and the closest, is a little like a rodeo.

I don't think the pox came from the auction because the roo had it first, but we had already had them 2-3 weeks when it showed up. The roo and sussex hens we got from the livestock section of a sale site. The guy had tons of birds so they may have carried it from there; I don't remember the incubation on pox. We live near a river on land that doesn't drain, so I'm fairly certain it was something natural and unavoidable, unless I had thought to vaccinate them.

mosquitoes right ? My daughter has had a set back. this is day 5 of her surgery and she started throwing up last night and refusing food and water. she is in more pain in her belly. Not sure if i said or not but her crones ended up not being the problem. it was scar tissue from the last surgery that caused the blockage. it was the same surgery though. they didnt have to take as much out as thought . I should be with her. I wish i was.

I was going to save our flock block for while we're gone, but one of the white hens drew blood on my speckled pullet so I went ahead and put it out. It was a hit!

Really check that one over that got bloody. There might be some health problem your bully sees that we can't, and she is attempting to weed out the weakest.

Sometimes there is one aggressive hen in particular that causes the problems. If you can identify and remove her for a few weeks, the rest of the flock will resort themselves in the pecking order, and she can be reintroduced back into the flock with a new and lower status. I did this with a crazed Leghorn, and the flock was calm and peaceful while she was in reeducation camp. Unfortunately, I didn't keep her out long enough and she went back to her old tricks. Not a problem now, as she quit laying completely this year and seems to have lost her aggression.

Thanks! They've been getting frequent and thorough checks because of the awful pox. The pullet that was pecked had the mildest case of everyone, one or two spots at most. I currently have two or three who have an eye that won't open. So I'm sure the pullet was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. A different white hen was jumped by my neighbor's dog this morning; there was a spot of blood on her feathers, but I couldn't find where it came from. My poor girls are having a hard time.

Granny, that's really terrible what your daughter's going through. At least she's in the hospital where they can help her. How far away are you from her? Hoping that she will have a restful night and feel better tomorrow.

Yes, they sure are, poor things. It's so frustrating when they have problems. Kind of makes me crazy, like when I was dealing with red mites this summer. Lost my favorite hen.

Maybe you could add a stump, a log, or an old chair or sawhorse to the run. Something that would provide a way for them to hide a bit and escape the meanies.

thank you both. I think she is a little over 500 miles. from me. I couldnt drive it myself . got me over here thinking about a course . for the chickens. little limbo bars, hoops , the tunnel. weave bars. that should do it. I might actually try this come spring. put them at one end and favorite treats at the other. been looking for one of those small old pianos.
