that gives me an idea, If that hard nasty clay can build missions then it can build chicken coops. hmmm... Could get a pond at the same time. I so want a pond.

Nearby town of Petaluma was once the egg capital of the world, starting after the gold rush. Chicken farms all over, some with thousands and thousands of laying hens. Hatcheries and breeders and eggs shipped by rail and down the river to the big city (San Francisco). At least until they built the Golden Gate bridge. All chicken coops were made of redwood. Beautiful straight grained old growth redwood, that you can't find any more, used for coops that are mostly falling down now, the few that haven't already been torn down. In earthquake country, I'm afraid an adobe coop would be a hazard. That's also why you'd never catch me living in one of those multi-story mini-mansions.

Here's the barn where I grew up (well, I didn't grow up in the barn, although spent a lot of time there). It's over 100 yrs old now. The redwood boards and timbers are worth more than the barn itself. Dad still uses it for his workshop and to store all the extra furniture and stuff that we can't seem to part with.

I have never had the flu. never took a shot either and i also have a compromised immune system. (no not that)  Its from having to take prednisone all my life. look at a person with cushings and you will see me in some respect.  Maybe lularat will know. as she is a nurse but i have a very rare problem its called congenital adrenal hyperplasia with unusual presentation. top notch endocrinologist in Detroit Mi. at Henry ford hospital took my case for free so i could be studied.  believe his name was Max Weisgerhof. something like that anyway. I am not a freak as some can be . hence unusual  . I am glad to say the world has become more accepting today then it was when i was young. of course i also adopted that I dont give a rats but  attitude as well. I had 2 children naturally something they said would never happen. I was very blessed.   Anyhow, that was probably a little more info then needed when all i wanted to say was i never had the flu. whatever put me in the hospital this last time was bad. worse then i ever felt. freezing and on fire at the same time. begging the drs. to knock me out and never did find out what it was.
My father had some type of adrenal condition. The endocrinologist found it because he had just about 0 male hormones and his female hormone level were off the charts. The doctor was very surprised that he fathered 5 children. It turned out the he had a tumor the completely encompassed his purturitory gland or adrenal gland (not certain which gland) that was in-operable. He was put on medication that was supposed to help shrink the tumor. I have a surpressed autoimmune system as well, not caused by AIDS like so many people jump to that conclusion when they hear that term. We are born with what God gives us and it's up to us to choose how we live our lives. I choose to go out fighting lol.

Yes granny! We have a summer camp and retreat facility with cabins, yurts, and rv pads. I do all the food service. :D

We're embracing the "farm-to-table" trend by putting in vegetable beds next month. I'm in the middle of talking with DHH and the dept of agriculture so I can use my own eggs in the camp's food service. Next year the camp will have it's own flock for the campers to explore and learn from.

omgosh ! love the barn ! just had 4 more children over for a couple hrs. that makes 10. I am a little tired. hope everyone has a good night

Since we are talking about gardening I have a question I have a cherry tree I planted two seasons ago that really likes to shoot up in growing season more so then the other fruit trees I planted. I was wondering if I can dig it up and move it or will that kill it. I'm going to be building a wire roof over the fenced orchard for my silkies and I want to replace it with a dwarf cherry. Would love advise. I would hate to kill it.

Moving the tree could be done, a big under taking. Moving a tree in the fall after leaves have fallen off, and you have severely pruned the tree, will cause the least amount of stress on the tree. This will give the tree all winter to grow roots instead of leaves, flowers and branches.

There is still considerable amounts of ice on the trees. Most of the powerlines are free of ice and most of my friends reported clear roads to drive to work on Facebook. Now that I have figured out how to post pictures, I can drive you crazy !!!!
