Wow. Sounds awesome. They had a long trip. Probably felt good to be on solid ground. Questions. How big are they compared to a cow. Probably not as tall as a dairy cow, but longer? Will they push through a fence? Do they need some sort of shelter? Can you ride them? Can you take pictures?
There were on the road a 5 am and off loading 1/1:30 pm so not to long of a ride. The cows (female yaks) are about the size of a yearling beef cow. Porter is a little taller and broader. The tails are bizarre. bottom 1/2 covered in long hair and they swish them like a horse.
To me the cow's face is very horsey looking. Porter has a very broad head. Very aware/alert to anything going on such as the starting of motors the don't seem to fond of the four wheeler's noise.
They might push through a fence but I think only in a stamped type situation. Same type of fencing as cattle. 4 strand barbwire. The area they are in now is welded wire cattle panels attached to railroad ties every 8 feet with 2 x 8 boards screwed on the top and bottom of the panels and then the panels stapled to the boards. There is a loafing barn they have access to but from what I have read for the most part enjoy winter and that should be all they need.
She is no longer my little girl. Started her first "season" today. They grow up so quick. LOL But 10 months before her first season is longer then normal.
Was talking to the guy and his mother who delivered the yaks their are the old owner's neighbor. Said that the whole herd "hated" Scott M. their previous owner but I guess he was also afraid of them and animals can sense that. I will RESPECT Porter but not afraid. I so wanted to hug him, and pet him, and squeeze him. LOL when they unloaded.
Maybe Beth will calm down now. We never had a female dog that wasn't spayed. Does she need a diaper in the house? Do you have to keep her away from the male?
Porter will be good if you bribe him. Maybe carrots? If they are like goats, a big no-no is touching or tugging on horns. Also not supposed to rub their foreheads. Turns them into butt heads!
Grew up with a breeding stallion on the farm. RESPECT is the word. He was actually better with us females than the mares. They would smoosh you against the wall if they were in a bad mood. My dad was the one who had to watch it around the stallion.
One more yak question. Do they moo or low or snort or anything? Guess I'm wondering how they yak it up!
