I did the round egg experiment for three generations. I got a bunch of pullets that laid round eggs. The hatch rate of male/female chicks was still about 50/50. I was using a barred rock hen and an Araucana rooster. So I knew the sex ratio as soon as they hatched. My hypotheses? By breeding hens that lay round eggs for a few generations, you will end up with a line of pullets that lay round eggs......

Any pullet you can get eggs daily and eat at the end of egg laying is a good pullet....

But you got green round eggs!

I've always wondered if the time of year makes a difference. Early spring for more pullets? I got 6 of 9 pullets for my Serama hatch. Just lucky? or early spring? or maybe the hen laying the eggs threw out more females?

I wish I had more reasons to hatch... Waiting til spring and I'm gonna look for silkie eggs and a blue egg layer of some sort to hatch.

And now, knowing hubs and roosters...sigh. Even if one of the girls went broody tomorrow and one of the eggs was still fertilized would be a bad idea...

You can always buy some fertile eggs. Pick your breed too!
