Morning everyone! :weee Just to warn: I'm the kid with the new toy. Everything they do is cool! Lagertha is eating! You can see her coloring is MUCH better. So hoping for nice dark chicks from her. :fl
She has a very nice head, nice and round, room for brains! Try to keep that going in your line. So at 4 lbs, are these full grown? How old are they again? And the ones Newfie (??) has, are they a similar size? Really hope you breeding program is a success, because I may hit you up for some in the future. They are so cool! You made a good choice for your sussex replacement. Out here, I only know of people with ayam cemani, which I'm pretty sure are what the SH are derived from.
GFF says 4 lbs, but a svart honas thread on here from 2013 says 7-8. The breeder said there's no standard, but I do know the AC are considered to have a lean "gamefowl" type. The other cockerel had nicer tail but his comb fell over, so I avoided him. This pullet has a slight lean in her comb, so I'll have to watch that. Some of the pullets had high angles on their tails like seramas, but this one is a little more like the sussex "type." I asked the breeder about the tail angle, but she didn't have a preference. The pullet is 10 months and cockerel is 6-7. Newfie's are younger, so not sure on type. All the parent stock I've seen is either GFF or Ewe Crazy Farms, so I don't think there's a lot of variety. BUT I think I remember hearing that GFF has four different pens. From what I've read, the SH were imported from Mozambique to Sweden ??? years ago. I think that's why they have the rounder type and smaller combs than the more Mediterranean looking AC. It's all really interesting! The breeder had two roos with silver leakage in their hackles, making them look a bit birchen. She said that her first order didn't have that problem, but she lost most of them to a predator. So I'm anticipating heavy culls, which I think I remember birdman mentioning. I think the black/silver bleed through could make stunning babies with a lavender something. :love
