Are they several independent teachers unions in the Usa?

Well good ol USA covers a lot of territory. And there's very different costs of living in different places/states etc.

Is the federal government have any say in what the school teach?

I believe the teachers union controls most of it. Our federal government stays out of it and leaves it up to the individual states and unions. Surprisingly. Teachers here correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry, I mis-read you. I thought we were talking salaries. The federal government butts in all the time about WHAT to teach! Everybody with an agenda butts in!

Prayer / no prayer. evolution vs. creationist. And everything else in between. Even revisionist history. The holocaust deniers butt in periodically too.

I am back!  Worked outside after we got back from town.  Got a bunch of tomatoes planted (hubs and boys) and a lot of weeds pulled (me).  Hubs leaves tomorrow morning for San Diego to work a trade show.   San Diego is a beautiful place.  Wish I could go too! 

If you ever did make it to San Diego I'd hope to see you at some point! (We're about 45 minutes from San Diego proper
