probably change of diet and stress and what not. Have you tried putting a stuffed animal in the cage with him ?? or did the previous send a bit of the dog blanket he and family slept on. (I always do that )

Got him from the amish. I doubt it had ever had dog food, blanket or been in the house.
 
also a good thing to do if you are crate/cage training. DO NOT make a big deal out of letting him out of cage, just calmly take him outside as soon as you open the door. This will help with the "excitement piddles"
 
My daughter built a 6 ft high platform in our pasture to shoot deer from. Made from mercury preserved wood. The horse ate it up & it wasn t because of lack of food either.

I know that stalled horse's will or can get the BAD habit of "cribbing" aka knowing on the stall wood I think mainly out of boredom.

we are doing crate but OMG what a mouth that boy has. he has blanket and stuffed animal in there.
