Don't use dry ice. It's frozen carbon dioxide. Great for plants to breathe, but not so good for us mammals.

Ice cream salt would work, but I think Linda's right in thinking any type of salt would help. Get one set up and experiment! After making your fridge-o-bator, any of these will be a piece of cake for you. You could run one in each room and still probably save money over central ac.

I knew there was something about dry ice. just didnt know what. I thought if you touched it it would burn your skin.

Instant frost bite. Feels like a burn. Actually, you can touch it a little bit, like a hot potato! We love playing with it.

Sitting in the parking lot of the smoke shop. I had to get out. Told I was gonna buy a pick of cigerrettes and be back. Wonder if I should get them in darken Arizona!

So what is dry ice used for then ?

Keep things cold. Ice cream vendors and coolers and such, shipping/mailing things that need to stay cold. Usually used outdoors or at least with windows open, but I wouldn't want it blowing in my face. Carbon dioxide is denser than air, so it sinks, but it is also what your body works to expel, so you don't want a higher level in the air you breathe.
