ok, makes sense now. So Porter and Comet (maybe) are like black Springers with a liver parent.

yes we know Porter has the imperial from his father and Comet shows/ is registered as a native. But one of her unknown parents could have been an imperial

That is part of the reason I have trouble following chicken genetics.  They will say split, but not say what is dominant or recessive.  I get all confused.


It is my assumption that the term split to mean it is recessive
So say black split to chocolate means black is dominate. Isn't this the way you read it?

Split is the same as saying heterozygous. And as was stated, is used with recessive genes. You know the bird is split because of breeding records, not from appearance.
