We call him Grandpa John. It is a difficult family dynamic, that I will not go into, except to say that forces beyond our control dohertheir best to keep the "family" divided into mine and his. Also, the way I was raised, inlaws are called by their first names. Not out of disrespect, as much as tradition. My dad is still alive, and I think he would feel a bit betrayed by me calling another man "dad." I cannot imagine calling anyone else "mom." I had only one. It's kind of sacred.

Toms kids call me mom which is hilarious as one of them is older then me and the others close in same age.

You could probably do the same idea using some sort of insecticide, although with all your rain, it would just wash off. I knew about the ants and aphids, did not know they farmed scale!!
I do think it's more of a cultural thing. Chinese aunties were gleefully horrified when I called my MIL by her first name. She never invited me to do else wise.
Hubs calls my dad Grandpa or Captain.![]()

Scale is a plant parasite, very harmful. In the first picture of that link, see the bumps on the tree branch? Those bumps are scale, an insect that drills into the plant and sucks it to death, or at least parts of it. If we ever have an infestation, I usually prune the limb and throw it in the garbage can to keep it from spreading. It I see a few, I pick them off and crush them.
The scale will spread by itself too, without the help of ants. I think when the ants are farming aphids (and I guess scale) they actually protect their insect "herds." They swarm all over if something tries to eat their aphids. You never see lady bugs where ants are farming aphids.those scales is why I chopped one of my trees down. I didnt know the ants were doing it ! The little buggers. That is on some of my bushes as well so tanglefoot wont work for them.
