The scale will spread by itself too, without the help of ants. I think when the ants are farming aphids (and I guess scale) they actually protect their insect "herds." They swarm all over if something tries to eat their aphids. You never see lady bugs where ants are farming aphids.

thats cause all the lady bugs are in my bathroom ! Do the asian beetles eat the same as ladybugs ?

the ladybugs then there is a asian beetle look-a-like. not as many or too many spots and they bite !
OHH that might be the sap. Never thought of that. so very gross. It was black-ish on my poplar.

there was hardly a spot on that tree that didnt have scale. some bigger then the ladybug !

Best way to control is to kill the larva, but you have to know what species to know when they hatch, to spray at the right time. Sounds like usually sometime in summer.
