If you ban free trade, you cannot expect people to buy from you. A country must exist by exporting either goods and or services. A massive company like Walmart might seem all powerful but it must be remembered it needs the vast market place of the US to survive. If customers don't like it's business practices, for example the low wages and conditions they must make Walmart know about that by voting with their feet. I know this can be very effective because some years ago, it was discovered that M and S, a very high profile store here and internationally, was receiving garments, made in Asia, in factories with appallingly poor and dangerous conditions and employing children in very unsafe environments. The press made a big issue of it and the public got behind them. M and S were held accountable for the way these Asian workers were being treated and was able to put sufficient pressure on their suppliers to conform with UK safety standards and the employment of children acts. Now they regularly inspect these factories. Never underestimate the power of the consumer in all this. Ethical businesses sell!!!

Um... Not sure what your getting at. I dont see anything here about walmart except people save money because walmart offers low prices... which they achieve through bad business practices.

I agree 100% the problem is... the problem is people dont care anymore, or refuse to see the light. Apple and Microsoft have been in the media alot the last few years for having sweatshop contractors such as FoxCon who have had entire factories burn down with workers still locked inside. For a week or so thats all the media was talking about. But Xbox and Macs still sell like crazy. America doesnt care if its being self destructive. The vast majority of the people dont want to have to think about the effects of their actions. They want to live their lives as weapons of massive consumption and be told what they should think by the govt. Ethical businesses may sell, but un-ethical businesses offer lower prices which means they sell more!

There are 4 referances to back up what I said. You have provided conjecture and opinion. I am not sure how suggesting you were incorrect in your statement was insulting. My understanding was this was to discussion of viewpoints. I have seen no insults, only opinions on the matter and corrections all around. The "kool-aid" remark was general term for believing what one hears and not checking up on the facts. If you will provide proof other then conjecture and taking your word for it then I can retract my previous statement. However it wasnt an insult, its meant to encourage you to open your mind to other viewpoints.

Food for thought by the way if anyone is interested on why WalMart is part of the domestic problem
Link one is a paper trying to sell a community on giving walmart a break to incite them to move there.

Link 2 an 3 are the same group. A very odd group talking about standard practices an blaming walmart for them.

Strait from the comments of link 4: "Tinley Park allowed us to believe Walmart demanded the tax breaks, but the Village put the proposal together themselves. They don't seem to want to take the heat for asking the school districts to pay development costs for a swamp land while they reap the property tax benefits."

Link 5 is almost all about free trade an is comparing the market before NAFTA with the market after NAFTA. They use walmart as soap box but are talking about free trade. That was what I was talking about.

Walmart is just playing the cards the government is giving them...

Yes "Drinking the Cool-aid" is an insult an a bad one. If you dont understand the meaning of the term you should not use it. By accusing someone of "drinking the cool-aid" you are making a comparison of them to a group that:
1 disowned their family.
2 moved to Guyana.
3 assassinated a US congressman an staff.
4 killed their own children
5 an then killed them selves.

4&5 are where the term "drink the cool-aid" comes from. They drank cool-aid that they knew was poisonous.

Jim Jones, Jonestown. Saturday, November 18th 1978.

I am not sure I know a bigger insult you can use on someone for holding an differing opinion than you...

The US up until about 20 or 25 years ago had a odd system. We had free trade from state to state but not outside the US. It serves us well for the life of the country. Our whole economy was based off this system, as was all our regulations. We as a country started opening up our borders to free trade around 1990. Our country has fell apart. No one seems to know how to live in a global market. Everyone still wants to work a no skill job an afford a nice car, home an feed a family of 5. Fast food workers are pushing for $15 an hour for a job that only requires pushing buttons. That is the same pay that people that fix cars an rebuild engines make. Just south of our border they will do any job for half what our minimum wage is. The basic math does not work for people to get what they want an they want to blame it on businesses cause they dont understand the big picture.

Fact is that we cant compete in the global market an keep our economy as is. We ether have to close our system or wait till our economy levels off with the rest of the world, cut regulations then start rebuilding. No one is happy with ether. People seem to want to blame anyone an everyone when basic math is the issue.

When times and situations are like this, it requires some tough decisions and sacrifices. I was in a very similar situation as you in 1994. The economy in California was in the toilet. Home values went down about 30% or more, and construction jobs were scarce. We moved to where the work was. Left family and friends so that we could make a living. It was the best move we ever made. You might have to consider a move to someplace like N. Dakota or Texas. In N.Dakota the french fry cook is making $15 and hour at McDonalds. Don't stay where you are if it's not working out. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
Yes, it takes tough decisions and sacrifices. Biggest problem is his job track record...not good. He can not hold a job for longer than two years, usually some companies will go belly up or he gets terminated for being too detailed or being too "anti union". I won't leave the state when the family security is being compromised. If he worked for CAT and they want him to transfer to TX, sure, I will go where he will be transferred but now there is NO guarantees of job securities and if you want to transfer, the costs are on you and your pocket. They are not going to pay for your moving expenses.

Shouldn't we blame Clinton for his open door free trade agreement or NAFTA? So many of our companies are moving overseas, building products and ship it world wide.

What I don't get is this, our employer, CAT, would manufacture parts in Mexico, ship it up here or varios CAT locations where they will be assembled, completed or incomplete. Don't they ever stop and think about saving dollars? Shipping here and there, tractors incompleted, going from one factory to another in a different town or different state. I think CAT is pricing themselves too high, due to transportation expenses and union wages, health insurance, maintaince of buildings. I know CAT has a headquarters in Peoria, IL and have done reasonably well. Now the Peoria river is constantly low, getting barges stuck, and high taxes, they were talking about moving down to Mexico and building more factories in the Far East countries.

I would assume Wal Mart would have done so well in other countries. Particuarly if they had some in Russia, remember the long food lines, and food shortages that riots occurred more often, seeing empty refigerated units, and poor old, elderly, the young and the poor would literally shake their fists in frustrations at their government. Are we going to head in that direction of old Soviet leadership that everyone has to fight to stay alive, drink ourselves to death or rationed foods?

I am afraid the answer is "yes." The die was cast in the Johnson years when it was decided that we could re make society and fight foreign wars with our grand kids tax money. Now, the bills are coming due. The prisons are full of the "human capital" that we invested in. We have a couple of generations of people that really don't know or care who their fathers were.

So many people are now dependent upon government handouts they can't see the end coming. We own so much money that we will never be able to pay the bill.

When I returned to the US in 1966, US customs seized my flip flops and thermos because they were made in Red China. Now, everything is made in Red China and WalMart is the purveyor.

We need to return to tariffs to support our government, but no, they will turn to the printing press to pay the bills. When that becomes apparent, all of those dollars held abroad will suddenly be let loose. The market will be flooded, and the cost of goods will go out of sight. We will again see the stagflation we saw in the Carter years. High unemployment and higher prices will be the problem. We will rapidly suffer a falling standard of living.

Worse, those dependent upon social welfare programs will not understand or care what the source of our ills are. They will blame others, the rich, people of other races, immigrants and of course people of a certain religious faith. We are headed for bad times.

Quote: You my uneducated friend is the one drinking the Kool-aid the Walmart in the town south of me opened next door to it's self because they wanted a bigger building (not enough property for a super center) and they went from "city" to "county" and NEITHER the city or county EVER give them any tax break. And the town to my north did give them a tax break but refused to give them an occupancy permit their agreement on the conditions of the tax break was met, and the only reason the town offered them a break was because they WANTED wal-mart to move because of the traffic conditions at the intersection was not designed for such a biusness to be there so when wal mart asked they readly agreed with certain conditions, because it served both parties interests for them to move.
