Hello! Does anyone recommend any certain breed of rooster? We want a rooster that would be great towards our ladies, friendly towards us, and would protect his flock well. I know it matters more about the rooster itself, but are there any great rooster breeds that you have had a great experience with?

I have 8 male's now that are permanent, if not more by next spring:

Mixed breed (Bantam CochinX Standard EE) - Friendly but wary. Loud, gentle towards chicks and hens, but breeds his favorite bare every year. 4 or 5 years old

Pheonix standard - Friendly, but not a lap bird. Protects flock and chicks. Doesn't tolerate teenage male's breeding. Doesn't breed hens bare. 4 or older

Sumatra standard - Quiet, nonagressive, somewhat handleable. Hadn't bred yet. 6 years old

White Faced Black Spanish Bantam - Loud, wary. Doesn't breed hens bare. Will fight male's through wire. 5 years old

Turken Standard - Wary, but hadn't started breeding yet. -1 year

Cornish Bantam - Skittish, hadn't started breeding yet. Doesn't tolerate other male's well. -1 year

Belgian D'anver - friendly, handlable. Early maturing. Hadn't started breeding yet. -1 year

Ayam Cemani - Very Skittish. Hadn't started breeding yet. -1 year

Note all these stay still when they are picked up but most try to avoid being caught.

My mother had a good couple white leghorn roos. They were brothers and got along well together, even when we only had two hens! The one was named George and was so friendly and would protect his hens and perch on her arm and only ever attacked a person once, only when they were throwing stuff at his hens and wouldn't leave them alone. I personally think leghorn roos tend to have good temperment, and have heard Silkies are generally good too.

Hmongs are super laid back, easy to handle, protective of hens and chicks and SOOO BEAUTIFUL!!!!
This is the 3 month old son of my favorite Hmong roo. 🤗😍

Silkies are always a safe route. My personal favorite is my silkie mix. He’s docile like one but more willing to confront a threat than my pure silkies. I also enjoy my turkens. One of them is a little more rough with the hens than I’d like but the other one is super sweet. My other two turkens aren’t old enough to tell but they’re sweet. None of my flock is super friendly in handling sense. Personally would not recommend a sebright. Some people have great experience with them not mine suffers from small man syndrome and sneak attacks me and picks fights with my hens. My Cochin bantam cockerel was sooooooo sweet and I loved him to death but he was unfortunately taken out by a raccoon. So I would recommend some kind of Silkie mix overall. Beanie is such a sweetheart.
