Female asparagus sets seed and these are what you are seeing. For most gardens, you want the male crowns...produce more spears than the female.

You have to get started early here because the sun burns everything by end of July beginning of August. I'm going to try some thin burlap canopies over my veggies this year to see if it helps and wet them down a couple times a day. Once 1pm hits, that sun is brutal!
