Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

I see you're in Houston. I have a cousin who lives in Dallas who came for a visit a few summers ago. It was about 85 degrees and he was astonished...he kept saying "Is it really 85??" With the low humidity it felt more like about 70 to him.

Lol.. I'm in CenTex.. when it's 120 here it feels like it's about 90 to me.. I went to Delaware a few years ago to visit.. it was 90 there and felt like 120. The humidity was so thick it felt like you could cut it with a knife .. they can have 100 % humidity and no rain.. I still haven't figured that one out yet

Our average humidity here last summer was about 16% and people were complaining that it was too humid...

Our favorite way with zucchini is to harvest when they're still slender and about 6 or 8 inches long...slice them about a quarter inch thick and saute them in some butter and onion and garlic...yum! We put in a yellow and a green each year. Most of it goes to the chickens and the compost heap, but we have lots of good fresh dinners with it. Those dang things are just SO prolific! When I find one that hid under a leaf and got huge, I grate and freeze it. You can add that to soups and stews and chili...makes for good thickening and it's so mild flavored and grated so fine, you really never know it's there.

It's almost time to start some of our seeds and I'm really getting antsy. We have 2 or 3 days of near 60 with lots of sun, then a few dreary ones and a couple inches of snow and then back to the warm...I'm ready for it to settle down already! LOL

Do you have a certain amount you put in each container? A special recipe you use? Or an amount you put in your soup? Can zucchini be done up with tomatoes . ?.

Do you have the fungal problem on your zucchini in Colorado like we do in Ny? Didn't get one last year.

I've never had a fungal problem.

But I came on the thread to ask if anyone grows Shallots? If so what variety? Where do you buy them? How many do you plant? (I just know I didn't plant enough garlic last fall, but I was away)

Rancher I grow both red and gold shallots. I think I bought them at Agway last year. I plant a rather small area 4 x 7 . I do love them. I find myself planting a small amount of a number of things. Shallots are so expensive in the store and they grow so nice it's a real treat.

I'm from Holland. Just imagine me getting off a plane in Atlanta for the first time. WOAH. I felt like I walked into a wall, when I walked out the airport. Never had experienced humidity like that!

Exactly why I giggle when I read of folks in dry climates talk about how hot it is at 90-95 degrees F. It's relative. If you are used to -20, then 25 makes you laugh. If you are used to 20 and it's really dry, then you don't understand how danged COLD that is when it's 32 and damp outside.

I usually struggle w/ that every year, but w/ the extreme heat and drought I have not had to deal w/ it in 2 years. But I found a supposed cure for it, haven't been able to try yet. But look up Korean Natural farming and making LAB (lacto basilicus acid) they say it will control white powder mildew and is pretty easy to make and store.

While I'm debating which seeds to order...I'm trying not to order them too quickly because then I will plant them too quickly....I've been enjoying watching my amaryllis grow. I have 2 other plants, one is growing nicely and planted it just a week or so ago, the other is a mini amaryllis (I guess?) and isn't doing anything, so I'm thinking it may be no good.

This is supposed to be a red lion, but I'm thinking that's wrong, it's not solid red and I don't think it's going to get solid red, but I've never had amaryllis before so I really don't know what I'm talking about. I do love them though, it's neat to see how quickly they grow. The next flower should be fully open by tomorrow I'm guessing. There will be 8 flowers total.

Everytime I grew an Amaryllis they would always collaps under their own weight

No matter how many scewers and whatnots I'd try to support the thing with.
