Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

I have a black thumb plants always die with me but animals well you wold be surprised as to how many I got to live. Don't know why I can't get plants to live.


Maybe it is that I can't rememeber to water them, if I don't have them to look at all the time for some reason I can't seem to water them.


or maybe I keep them inside I reckon it is ironic maybe I keep them in so they don't die but they do.


Anyone else have a black thumb.

holy cow, dchicken207! Why did you have to post all those pictures, now I'm really going crazy waiting for spring! I am really jealous about those purple potatoes what are they called again? I grew german butterball last year and they were amazing tastewise, but I really want to try those purple ones.

I started my seedlings because I can plant things in late february with my mild weather here...and my garlic is already coming up, I planted it a few weeks ago and its already up, its my first time doing garlic so I was impressed at how fast it all happened.

Rancher hicks: As for herbs, Cooking has never been so satisfying or attractive since I have started using my own herbs, topping dinner rolls, pastas, adding them into soups and on roast chicken has really made me a fresh herb addict... I have a hard time not using herbs in recipes now. Presentation is a huge part of the satisfaction in a meal at home, If you have a little extra sprinkled showyness on your plates (not to mention lovely flavor) your family will notice and enjoy! I just had my 6 year old nephew over and I made his dinner look beautiful with fresh herbs sprinkled over his pasta and a few extra showy touches, it was basically the same sort of food he usually eats but he wouldn't stop talking about how beautiful his food was or how delicious it tasted. He even told my sister about it later.

I have had trouble growing my own herbs, except with parsley, its a crazy plant, always healthy and taking over. I've struggled with oregano and basil, I'm trying two varieties now instead of just the one to see if it was just the one variety that wouldn't grow. I'll be sectioning off an old blue food barrel that I cut into 3 sections and sinking it in the ground so I can have a herb garden this year, I'll post pictures if it all grows well. So far, using a heating mat for sprouting this year had made all my herbs germinate. Also if you want to grow your own herbs outside may I reccomend a mesh cover-I lose quite a bit of my young herbs to various types of moth larva. Good luck cooking

I'm pretty sore and achy today. Yesterday I tilled a 12x70 foot area in my garden getting it ready to put onions in. They are scheduled to ship Jan. 30, and I want to be ready for them. While I was tilling, I found lettuce seedlings coming up, so I tried to till around part of them. When I get the onion beds staked out, I'll transplant the lettuce to a safer place.

Sorethumb- the Purple potatoes are a variety called blue adirondack or at least thats what they were called where I got them. But they are solid purple no blue at all and very good. We grew some fingerlings and reds last year also but the purple were my favorite.

I was wondering what this plant was... At the library, I found a book about plants. it says it's a livorwart. is it safe for chickens to eat? cuz my baby chickens ate the heck out of these.... this forum is about "green thumb" so feel it still belongs here... and in case someone replies to my orignal question of what it was, just after posting, i couldn't get online and i found a book and it was pretty easy to find a match.

Did you get your seeds and tubers from FEDCO? My Adirondack Blues did okay, but the Kennebecs did the best. I'm trying fingerlings this year (LaRatte).

Also, did you start your leeks and onions from seed or from plants? I want to try both this year, from seed.

Aside from that, a LOT of new tomato varieties. Maybe I'll even try sprouting my own sweet potato slips to see if I can get them to grow for a change. Plus more herbs - extra basil plants, cilantro, chives, parsley, oregano, etc.

Can't wait to get started!

You know, thinking about all these herbs got me thinking about growing 10x what I need and selling them at my april garage sale. People pay $2.99 at home depot or the grocery store for an herb plant. I'm going to give this a try. I may even do tomatoes too, I mean just imagine, 2 bucks a plant x 40 plants could buy me a lot of ducklings & chicks.

One thing I hate about the garden shops is they only grow the same o' , same o'. No new or different varieties. I intend to try new varieties not just "Roma" or "Ace" or "California wonder". My point being Sore you may do well with your plan. I hope so.
