Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

Oh I still get weeds but with raised beds they are easy to pull. I don't spaz over a weed or two either. Of course if I was taking pictures for the magazine I'd clean everything up and pretend that the way things are.

Topsoil is fine. I mix or make my own soil with all sorts of things. Chicken cleanings , hay, straw , horse manure , things from the house, purchased garden soil, peat moss, grass cuttings. etc. etc. and top soil if it goes on sale.

The only mags that would want a pic of my gardens are "The Lazy Gardener" or "Redneck Gardeners Digest" or something similar!!!

So far as weeds and whether or not you'll get them with X manure or X soil: You'll get weeds no matter what you do. Don't be duped into passing up something great because it might have weed seeds in it. EVERYTHING has weed seeds in it. They blow around and come from everywhere in Creation. Been gardening for 40 years and the only difference is that sometimes at least you get a variety of weeds that you haven't seen before.

Al , it blooms on new wood so pruning in the early spring is OK.
They say keeping it under control is the real problem.
I'm going to put some around the telephone pole tomorrow and wait for spring to plant the rest.

And earlier there was talk of cheap building material... My favorite is free wooden pallets. They're a bear to dismantle if the have the twisty nails though. They don't last forever but I bet they'd last a couple years, even in contact with soil.

I'm getting ready to start my tomato and pepper seeds for next year. It hasn't froze here yet but probably will soon (NE FL). I have a bunch of bananas that aren't quite ripe yet still out there. I am thinking of digging up the banana plant (Its only about 8ft or so) and putting it in the greenhouse but may just cut the bunch to see if they will ripen if they get large enough before it freezes. Here is a pic of them.

NICE! we had some bananas when we lived in south Texas and used to do just that. Let them stay until a frost or freeze was forecast then cut the bunch and hang them in the garage till they ripened. I've heard that they never ripen well on the plant anyway.

Haha good joke on me, it is supposed to get down to 32 briefly for a few hours tonight! I am not prepared at all either. I just covered what I could and dug up a few plants and moved some pots of the most tender things under shelter. I guess I will go out there and whack down the banana bunch before I go to bed tonight. I'm too tired to do anything else lol.

I think my "plant on a rock" is working! I see roots growin right along the rock where it touches the side of its clear container, about 3" below the surface. I cut an inch off of the container today. So far, so goofy! I mean good!
