Hello. I'm writing to you from Kastamonu Turkey, Black Sea region. Some of what I will be posting is area-specific.
I wanted to introduce myself and tell you about our duckling Limon. We did not find much information about her condition online, so I wanted to share what we have learned in case it can help others.
We bought Limon and her sister Lahana in late June. They both appeared healthy and strong. Within a few days, Limon started to rub the feathers off of her breast and neck. We took her to a local veterinarian who said this behavior was just due to humidity. That veterinarian prescribed vitamins (we later found out that we were prescribed 100 tomes the normal dose) and didnt listen to their heart or lungs. Well, it's dry in Kastamonu so I didn't think this was correct. A few days later, Lahana started getting weak. Lahana could barely stand or feed herself, and Limon was starting to get weak too. We contacted another veterinarian 6 days after the first vet visit. He diagnosed respiratory infection from seeing a video (it was a Saturday evening, office wasn't open). We went the next day to get antibiotics. By the time we returned home, Lahana had passed.
As of today, Limon is 6 weeks old and has been on antibiotics for 16 days. She is taking something called Meta-Clor. Not much info in Emglish on this med. She has the appropriate dose of poultry-specific vitamins. Her legs are weak and splayed, but her overall health is improving. The veterinarian says that, in time, she should make a full recovery.
Hopefully this info can help others. If your ducks start rubbing off neck and breast feathers, please go immediately to a veterinarian to have them checked.
