Greetings from SOON (Moving to) Prosperity, South Carolina- hope to have chickens

I had been to the link you posted, (but looking now, I think you deleted it, lol) and I couldn't make heads nor tails of it. I, like you THOUGHT I had found it finally, but then there was nothing straight forward about it. Good idea to let the realtor do the work, LOL. What I HAVE done was I sent an email to the reporter that wrote the article in the Newberry observer you linked earlier to see if SHE could steer me toward the info I am looking for. I am pretty sure that once we are settled, we will just assume we are good to go, build a coop, and then simply beg forgiveness if we are wrong.

Well, we still haven't found the NEW ordinance, but finally found one from 1999 expressly FORBIDDING Chickens etc in the city of Prosperity. No mention outside city limits. THEN my husband found THIS article from April of 2014:

So YAY! We can have up to 6 Chickens, (no rooster). That is WITHIN the city on a 1/2 acre or more, so I can't imagine a problem outside city limits on 2.84acres, right?

YAY we can have chickens!

My response with details went to admin for approval (since it has an outside link and I'm a newbie - good policy) so I imagine it will post later.

LOL, I am reserving judgment there until we truly have a chance to explore. But let's just say, that once you move away from the Lake area I haven't seen a lot of "prosperous" signs. We actually haven't been into the middle of town, which I believe I have heard is quaint. I am excited about exploring, and just love the general area. Have to admit, I LOVE the idea of our new address. It evokes positive vibes. We plan on making it a reality regardless of what we find.

Hi! I found this thread when trying to look up the rules for chickens in Prosperity! I was wondering if you ever found out the official rules for our area! Thanks!

Hi lesalia17 - Are you in Prosperity??? How long have you been in the area? Can't wait to get moved. So far, all we have is that article linked in one of my comments above. I DID contact the reporter and got this reply:

"Hi Whitney,
Thanks for your email! I believe the article you're referring to was actually the first Prosperity Town Council meeting that I'd ever covered while working for The Newberry Observer.
Would you be living in the city of Prosperity or in the county? If you'd be within city limits, you could call Town Hall in Prosperity and ask to speak to Karen Livingston. She would have access to the town's ordinances and could tell you exactly what the area you'd be looking at is zoned for.
I think the area you'd be living is actually in Newberry County, just not within the Prosperity city limits. I believe in that case, you'd need to talk to Anne Peters, director of planning and zoning for the county. Her number is 803-321-2166. I think that's the overall office number, not her direct line. Hopefully she will be able to point you in the right direction!
Sorry I didn't have more information, but hopefully this helps! Please let me know if I can be of any more help.
Thank you,

I have not looked into any further as I am still busy in GA with selling our current home. We closed on the Prosperity house a few weeks ago. Right now my husband lives out there during the week. We will be doing some renovating before we truly move in. If you look into it any further and learn anything, please come back and post your findings!!! ~Whitney~
