This is exactly what I do. I wrote a list of every meal I know how to cook, then next to that I listed what I serve with them for side dishes. Then I wrote my grocery list based on one month of those meals. 3 adults two kids, soon to be 3.
For example, if I have 4 meals in the month that call for ground beef, then I put 4lb. ground beef on my shopping list. Three meals that I use broccoli? One costco bag of frozen broccoli on my list. I did this for everything, down to the condiments.
When I cook, I will cook all or half the beef at once, then divide and freeze it so the next time I don't need to do that step.
I also plan my menu around using the leftovers in another meal.
I have left over roast, potatoes, and carrots in the freezer that will turn into stew, or soup one night this week.
I go once a month, and I shop in bulk, it does save money here in Alaska. Even the meat, I bring it home and vacuume seal it into portions.
There are certain things that won't save me money by buying in bulk if they will just go to waste, so instead of buying 5lbs. of onions, I will go to Fred Meyer and buy the one or two that I will use for the month.
My last shopping trip, I spent $400.00 and that was with buying paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, softener, shampoo.
So next month won't cost me as much because I won't have to buy a lot of those things again.
For desserts, I make them from scratch. But I still check my pantry and make sure I have the ingredients. I don't want to back to the store for any reason, because I am one of those people that go in for sour cream, and come out with $50.00 worth of stuff.
You know, everyone just has to find what works for them. At least now you are aware of the situation and want to do something about it. Good for you!
