Grocery store eggs series 2021

So I decided to candle the duck eggs today (day 4) just for fun, and what meets my eye but yolks bending into telltale U-shape with a pinkish dot cradled in the middle. Three of them. :th Well color me surprised — there are signs of life in half of the eggs!

I’d been expecting to clear out this incubator soon to put in eggs from Quaiken (the quail) before doing the next grocery store egg set. Change of plans — guess Quaiken’s eggs have to wait for the last button egg to finish.

Congrats!! That’s soo exciting!:wee I might visit a local Asian market for duck eggs here next time I wanna do an experiment now. 😜

Well, well, well... Yesterday morning I candled and was amazed to see three eggs definitely veined and developing. :) Two more had early development but apparent blood rings. :hmm The sixth one was a double yolk with no development at all. Ah well, 50% viability is pretty impressive. I decided to candle one more time this afternoon before removing the early quitters.

But wait, what’s this? The blood rings weren’t blood rings at all! There are now five clearly veined, developing duck embryos in the incubator. I can’t wait to see what happens with these eggs.

Fantastic news! Glad they're growing and developing so well. Can't wait to see what hatches. Since they're ducks will you be cooling and misting the eggs? I remember that starting at day 10. So you have some time to decide. Also prepare yourself for slow hatching. Ducklings take A LOOONG time from pip to zip. Up to 2 full day is completely normal. That was a huge change for me from chicken eggs.

Hrrrrmmmm... I have never done the daily resting/misting method with duck eggs before. If it needs to start at day 10 I’d better research and decide soon. I just remember ducklings taking a while and coming out more “limp” than chickens at first, like I would be worried that they were unhealthy, then suddenly they’re running around the incubator screeching.

Oh yeah, now I remember the screeching.

Here is a sampling of the day 11 candling of the duck eggs. All look just about like th.

They’re actively moving and well veined.

I decided to try the misting/reatingmethod for the first time. It’s a little intimidating so I went for just the very lightest spritz.

17 more days to go! This is going to be agonizing.
