Gross! Cracked egg to eat and there was a chick!

I would say the kid helping her gather eggs theory is a good guess. I am sure she wouldn't risk something like that happening. It sounds like she sells a LOT of eggs and it just wouldn't be worth it to her.

Wow....9 is plenty old to be cooking!!! I have been helping in the kitchen since I could walk and my husband is quite thankful.

All 3 of my kids (boys 11, 8, and 7) know their way around a kitchen.

1 egg with a chick that far along out of how many eggs from her? I'd give her the benefit of the doubt and let her know. Several possibilities for how it could have happened. Wouldn't turn me off from buying from her.

That's nothing.

I was getting eggs from a boy in our town for awhile. About 1 in every 4 dz had an embryo. Had several discussions with him that I didn't mind fertile eggs but I wanted ones that had been collected daily and refridgerated. He kept promising to do better. It kept getting worse.

The last time I bought from him I got 3 usable eggs out of 2 dz. 2 were rotten and the rest had embryos in them.

I couldn't crack another egg open for 6 months.

ETA: My DS who I think was 6 was helping make brownies at the time. He learned fractions and how to add and subtract them helping cook.

pretty gross ~ however ~ we humans DO eat the chicken once it gets bigger , lol, I guess it's sorta funny how it's so gross when it's still little, fuzzy, stuck to a shell, and almost into the frying pan, but when it's bigger, without a shell, and minus some feather & a head, we scarf it down like there's no tomorrow ~ ;-D

As to the cooking 9-yr old ~ ROFLL ~ I guess I was about 3 or 4 when I started cooking, and about 6 when I started cooking things like eggs & boxed stuff ~ same with all of my kids ~ in fact, they have dinner, meal planning & grocery budget assignments now. You can tell when it's the 10-yr old's turn, he makes up something fast & easy, like pasta salad or burritos or baked potatoes. And not from a box. My kids have all learned fractions, chemical reaction, and consistent outcome through cooking as well. Not to mention meal planning, budgeting & buying from a pre-made menu, & the value of cooking from scratch as opposed to boxed. Each kid has one month, $150, and a grocery list that they are responsible for. They are so good at it that I know it's gonna suck mightily when they leave home, and I will have the job of it again 24-7, instead of getting 5 months off like I do now. ;-D

And that , my friends is exactly why I do not and will not have roosters.

Agreed!!! The thought of eating a fertilized egg provokes my gag response.....silly, I know, given that I do eat FULL GROWN CHICKENS, lol! but the fertilized egg thought is really aversive to me....

Since you don't have a relationship with this woman, maybe you could write a note and put it in her money slot. Leave your number if you want her to follow up with you. I think she'd want to know. As for buying from her again, I don't know if I could...

As for children cooking, starting as toddlers I've taught them a healthy respect for the stove and "hot", so I've never had one of my kids burn themselves. At 2, they can stir soup or scrambled eggs, or add ingrediants I've measured first. One morning I woke up to my (then) 4-year-old making herself scrambled eggs, she had dragged a chair around to get the milk and eggs. I put the pan down and set the heat for her, but I let her cook it all by herself. I was really proud of her and she was so proud of herself, too! She's 8 now and it sounds like I've been holding her back, maybe it's time she start to learn some simple dinners, she'd love that! Thanks, Red!

Well, chiknegg does happen. I colllected eggs, apparantly from a nest that the hen had been sitting on for a while. Gave them to my MIL and she got the chiknegg for breakfast surprise.

As far as kidds in the kitchen. My 3 year old WANTS to help so she is my mixing girl and sets the table.

She also feeds the hog, fills water buckets, and helps her dad in the shop.

I think what I will end up doing is just a FYI note with my name, phone number and address. That way she can call for information if she would like. Dangerouschicken: Actually, once the shock wore off (I don't know how you could EVER be prepared for something like that) we did kind of get a chuckle out of it! As for my daughter cooking, she is 9 going on 29. She has actually been cooking for a couple of years. She loves it and gets a new cookbook for Christmas each year! She loves to look through the recipes to see what she would like to make. She is allowed to measure and mix and get everything ready but when she is cooking I am always in the kitchen. Anyway, it was gross and surprising and almost like a biology lesson. Glad to know it won't turn her off eating eggs! As far as the egg lady, I have been buying from her for about a year and I think I will see how she handles the note (if I don't hear anything back I don't think I will keep buying from her. If she calls or writes a note in response to apologize or explain or whatever I think I will still buy from her).

I have question that may be kind of silly but you all have me wondering! My hens started laying 2 months ago. I too am an all day egg collector! I read on here that alot of you leave your eggs in a basket on the counter. So far I don't get enough to last very long. They set there less than a week. Also I don't have enough to sell yet. However that is my plan. It has been up around 90 degrees here. Is it possible that a chick could develop with out mamma setting on it? Should I just refrigerate for saftey? They just look so pretty on the counter and I am so proud!
