Growing fodder for chickens

I bought 50lb of wheat seeds today for $50. They are soaking now.
That is expensive. Are they organic? Check out walmart.com. They have hard white wheat, $14 for a 26# pail. It is good stuff. Mine is sprouting very nicely on day 2.

This is what I have been using since October. I have just started on the second half (I put it in two plastic bins since mine came in a bag...pest prevention).

JenEric, hey - you are rly paying that little for wheat??

You are in Maine? Are the grains locally grown?

May I ask if it's food grade or feed grade? Even if feed, man, that's LOW!

If food grade, wow. Now, that said , wheat is usually what, $5 a bushel - unless a drought year - and a bushel is ... 50 or 60 lbs IIRC? That's what the farmer is paid, if I understand commodity market pricing (& I may well not). Talk about a MARK UP!

I can only find hard red wheat at a store called Sprouts - 99 cents a lb. But I'm in a big city w/ no true, rural feed stores, mills or true coops anywhere close (that I can find).

Yes, I'm in Maine.

I'm not sure if its food/feed grade wheat, since the cashier knew what I wanted it for I just asked what the prices on wheat/oats/barley were and accepted what she said. I'm going back this weekend and I can ask a little more about it and give you some more details then.

The place is called Paris Farmers Union and there are a few locations here in Maine, one store in North Conway, NH (close to the Maine/NH) border and one store in Middlebury, VT.

Thanks JenEric! I'm on the other side of the country, but I hope I can still find good prices like that - I will check link to see if they ship.

Someone said Wal-Mart.com has hard white wheat berries at $14 per 26 lb - they do' plus shipping unless you get several.. Thanks for posting this. This is half what I pay now for hard red wheat.

I'm gonna try it this year. I just ordered a cheap 15 ft greenhouse. I know the plastic doesn't make it through a season, but we covered our old smaller one in some stronger plastic and it worked well. I have some millet seed here to plant and I will try some other grains and maybe smaller types of corn through the year.
Any input maybe which plants are greenhouse friendly that would make good chicken food?
My birds forage for a big part of their food already(the Cornishes are much better at that then the Faverolles), but a 50 lb bag lasts me for a couple months with 15 birds and one of my Cornishes won't go in the coop, but rather sleeps in a tree(she is a weirdo), so she is a 100% forager and she looks just as healthy as the others.

You dont have to be signed up to look at these pictures on Facebook.

We have just started growing our fodder. We started the first week with doing it in trays, then we have made the flood and drain system on the wall. We will see how this works out, it will be automated soon. Here are photos. Feel free to ask questions, I will help where I can.
