Growth under rooster’s wing

That is up under the wing? Like our armpit?
The color worried me until I considered their black skin. It looks a little green, but that could be from his skin color.
Could he have gotten the wing hung on a fence or something? It looks like the skin was split open, but started to heal, but maybe got infected. I think I’d try some antibiotic ointment, it won’t hurt even if it doesn’t help. Tylan or baytril would be good options too, I think.

@staceyj @casportpony might have some ideas too.

i am worried about my Silkie rooster “Elvis”. I rescued him about a year ago. He’s probably a few years old. He’s free range during the day and cooped at night. There are 11 hens around him. They are all in good health.

I’ve noticed a change in his behavior. He used to crow. He’s not anymore. He’s sleeping on the job A LOT. I can walk up to him without him stirring and pick him up. Once he realizes I’ve grabbed him he’ll react. I’m actually surprised he hasn’t been taken by any predators as he’s literally a sitting duck.

I picked him up a few days ago and checked him for any issues. He has a massive growth under his wing. It’s not solid but it’s not squishy either. It has a funky gray-green color. I’m realistic it might be cancerous. He’s eating fine and still makes a lot of noise like he’s fine.

I just wanted someone to look at it and give me a second opinion. If it’s the worse case scenario I’ll let him live the best quality life he can until he makes it clear he’s ready to give up the fight.

He’s a sweet little thing too.
Does he flap, Or otherwise move it, or is he holding it in an unnatural position?

I’d vote for a vet visit as well but I’m wondering if it got caught and he might have broken the bone. If it was an open fracture the green could be bruising or a pocket of infection as a result of a break and displacement .

Have you touched it, to see if it seems painful?

Have you had a chance to better inspect it? If vet attention isn't an option I'd go ahead and try some Tylan and vitamins. I mean, if it's just a matter of waiting to see what happens you don't have anything to lose.

Hope it's something treatable :fl

You could try a few things that wouldn't necessarily make him worse, like antibiotics in the event it's an infected bite or abscess

Are those white/grey specks possibly lice/mites or just debris from doing his rooster things?
I think it’s lice. I didn’t even notice it. I went and checked it out and he’s got a lot of it. His breastbone is pretty prominent. I dusted him with DE. I’ll need to treat entire coop too. Just another thing to add to the plate.

He doesn’t mind me touching it but it’s warm to the touch. Hard to determine if it’s body heat since it’s under his wing or because it’s infected.

I'm not sure if DE will be enough to kill active lice. I've found it effective in preventing coop critters but doesn't always work once they have an infestation. It'll take a few days and may not work. If it doesn't you can use permethrin spray or dust and apply that; neither is expensive.

Knowing he has lice has me thinking that's some kind of infection from possible over grooming/ irregular feather growth related to lice. I'd try cleaning it and applying an antiseptic like betadine or Vetricyn.

I'm sorry, what a mess! :hugs

I gave him a bath this afternoon. He definitely has irregular feather growth. I’ll stop by tractor supply tomorrow for lice eradication items. I did feed him a scrambled egg and his appetite is healthy.
