GRRR so mad someone added their chickens to my flock

Quote:
I believe 14 days is the normal withdrawal period do not feed back to the chickens that just puts the meds back into the birds. So sorry someone did this to you but glad that the chickens found someone to care for them.

God that makes me worry. I am newer to chickens/turkeys and still am learning the ropes. But I certainly wouldnt appreciate some being dumped here, sick or not. We are on a budget and if my flock got infected by someone else, it is not an easy thing to spend money on your animals and someone elses that you dont have budgeted that week/month. I have my hands full enough with my birds. I am the one to decide when, how many, and from where my new birds are to come from, not anyone else. Now I know to watch out for this, since it seems rather common. I am not too worried here, we are in an urban setting now, not alot of people know or can see that we raise chickens and turkeys, but are moving more rural on 7 acres soon and it worries me more that it may happen then. I will need to make a big sign close to my animal shelters that say something about camras are watching for animal dumpers (worded better of course). Easy enough people, to post them free or cheap on craigslist (depending on their condition)...someone will take them either for meat or treat them seperate from their own flock to be intergrated upon clean health. I see plenty of free chickens on CL, usually unwanted roosters.

Okay venting here a little too, but I HATE when I see livestock on CL that are either free or for sale and say "not for meat"...isnt that up to whomever buys/takes the animal?!?!? sorry just my pet peeve when I look for animals on CL....

Yeah I read that 2 weeks it the toss out time. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I was a single mom for many years... It was so much harder to do the physically demanding things. I wish I could be there to help. Or at least make dinner while you take a bath. Sorry

I agree, it is easy to find a home for free laying hens. One thing to consider, very few people like taking a sick bird even if they are laying. I wouldn't take a sick hen laying or not. Dropping this problem on someone else is just wrong, if you don't have the nerve to cull and can not afford the care, you shouldn't have them. Persoanlly if mine get too sick I would cull. Sorry this happened to you.

True. I just can't see being so lazy that you can't drop them off at a shelter and instead drop them on a neighbor. Some people never cease to amaze.

Gruesom, but i'd be tempted to cull them all and hang them up out front so whoever abandoned them can see the end result. How maddening.

You might have to build a smaller separate pen with a sign on it "The Orphanage" for people to drop off their orphaned chickens.

This way they are kept away from the healthy.
I never considered this to be a problem that would even exist, but it seems that nothing surprises me anymore.

Last week we had 4 roosters dropped off at our house! Don't know when but they are mixed in with our flock. I kept telling DH that there were more roosters out there then we had, he said I was nuts.

When I penned them all up to straighten out some problems that had arose, I saw that there were 4 extra roosters

and one of mine extra that I had missed taking to the auction. Each pen has two roos and there are 3 pens being used at the moment. Tomorrow night I will be catching roos and placing them in cages to go to the auction on Saturday. Wish the farmers markets were open already, I could get rid of these real quick as they are fat and beautiful.

We live on the highway so things appear here all the time!!!

Just because it hasn't been mentioned yet...I'd place a call to the sheriff and let them know about the situation. It's always good to have some documentation if you end up needing it. And sometimes you can arrange for some extra drivebys during the day. They won't always do it, but I lived in a backwoods area for a little while and after the sheriff found out I was out there alone, he started to drive by more often. It made me feel better knowing one of the good guys was watching out for me. If the sherriff won't do it, perhaps a friendly neighbor can stop by and check on things randomly during the day while you are at work?

Good luck with the new girls.
