Guard animals? Lost 3 ducks already...

Thinking raccoon since one duck was headless through the wire.

1/2 inch welded wire hardware cloth stops them from reaching through.

Please dispatch quickly or call the proper authorities about relocation IF that is your plan. So many folks don't realize it's almost always illegal and inhumane to relocate. Bait with marshmallow for coons.

Sorry for your loss! :( :hugs

Some folks say that full grown geese are preditor deterents.
That was not the waY it turned out for me. My two male geese were taken by preditors, probably coyote.
A secure coop for your geese and ducks is the best way to protect your flock at night.
Chicken wire is no good. Use hardware cloth.
Close them in, and make sure there are no gaps or holes. Reinforce if something digging under and in is a possibility.
Protecting your birds will be labor intensive and lots of work, but worth it in the long run.
Good luck!

we have two geese. They are full grown. We had 8 ducks. We're down to 5. Any ideas??

Have cameras, they caught nothing.
Getting traps tomorrow.
Are your birds being kept free range day-and-night, or confined to an enclosure or co-op at any part of the day or night? If you are using confinement for all or part of the day, is that where If your birds are being confined at any point, is that where and when the attacks are taking place where are the losses being taken place for the birds are in the open areas?

I tend to let my girls free range. Over the years I've lost many birds to hawks. Although it is always sad to lose one, I think a short happy life is preferable to the alternative. Anyway... recently a family of Bluejays moved in to my neighborhood. There must be 8 or 9 of them at this point. At first I was a little annoyed since they eat more than their share at the feeders and seem to overpower the smaller birds. But I've noticed on a number of occasions, the Bluejays will overpower bigger birds as well. They will actually gang up on red tailed hawks and chase them off. Since first witnessing that, I've been buying special seed just for the Bluejays (they really like sunflower seeds). I'd be curious to know if anyone else has seen similar behavior.

They like peanuts packed for wild birds too.

I've seen it from crows... they will try to pluck the feathers out of the hawk during flight to ground them. (they are opportunist though and have been known to steal chicks and eggs). Jays are in the same family as crows... so it isn't that surprising. Jays are also quite aggressive birds, even territorial IF I remember correctly. Aside from the feather plucking they do... when they sit around and squawk at the raptor, it blows the raptors cover who is an ambush predator... often causing them to move on as all the prey is aware of their presence. :tongue

They are confined to a coop at night. They are going missing early morning after being let out, in the evening. Dusk & Dawn. Recently we even caught someone driving up, shooting them, and stealing them. It's been a rough few months.
