Guess what breed of horse I am!!

She's a pretty gal even if she didn't get any spots from her Paint dam. I have a Solid paint gelding out of a flashy color mare and stud but I wouldn't trade him for the world. His personality is excellent.

You know what I ment, lol. I know about horses, I used to train Thoroughbreds for a living. Man, was it rough! But I do miss it dearly. I live in Ky, the horse capitol of the world. BlackSilkey, Bucksin is the color of the breed they use not the breed itself. We arent trying to say your not right, just that Buckskin isnt the actual breed.

As I mentioned in my earlier post there is the International Buckskin Horse Association, but many horseman argue the validity of this "breed". As it is essentially horses bred for color.

It really is hard to describe what is a breed and what is not. After all the Paint horse "breed" started out by breeding horses with the "paint" color together. I think many Paints look very similar to other breeds, but it is because they come from other breeds and are "usually" bred just for color. If I remember correctly(and I may be wrong) many of those registered Paints were Quarter Horses with too much white.

Palomino goes through the same thing and I'm sure there are other breed/color arguments. LOL

If the Buckskins used by Canadian police are registered and have a standard, why wouldn't they be a breed?

This does bring up thoughts of the paint horse association doesn't it? I know some old horseman who still won't acknowledge paint horses. They consider them mutt horses. Most folks these days would say that they are a wonderful breed that does well both in show and performance. The APHA was created from horses that were kicked out of the AQHA due to the old "white rule". Now of course the white rule has changed, but it isn't such an issue anymore. Rarely is a reg. qh born with any unacceptable white, but it was a huge issue for many years when the breed was being established. The APHA was opened up and pintos (mustangs) were allowed in, if their markings met the requirements...hence the "mutt horse" attitude during the early days. The truth is that the foundation q/h were probably as much mustang as anything else, noone knows. They called inspectors out to look at the horses and the inspectors decided if they were good enough to register. There was no lineage, no pedigrees. Look at the old pictures of King's Peppy, Poco Bueno, Three Bars and Hancock. They weren't the lean, small headed breed that is so picturesque today. They were pretty stocky and, even mule headed in some cases, but bred down to a beautiful breed.

LOL. I just didn't want the argument to escalate into anything. Honestly, anything and everything can be considered a breed as long as it has a "standard" of some sort.

The standard could be as silly as "the animal must have large ears, light colored hooves, and a blaze" and then give it a name. LOL

It is why we have so many different breeds today. Some are very similar, but there is a difference(however slight) in their standards. Buckskin for example may have only been considered a color that occured in several breeds, but then someone decided they wanted a purely buckskin breed. A breed based solely on color or whose primary focus was color and secondary focus the build of the animal.

Same thing happens with chickens all the time and may even be a better example than horses. If someone takes a leghorn and decides that they what a breed very similar to the other leghorns, except for one slight difference(egg color/foot color/comb color/etc) all they have to do is give it a different name and after a while of breeding toward a standard, you have a different breed.

Sorry for ranting and hijacking the post! I just didn't want the "Buckskin thing" to elevate into a heated argument. It didn't seem to be getting anyway before.

PS: I love the way the old foundations looked, when they had a lot of that Mustang still in them. Talk about some tough horses!

Mr. Ree :

She is gorgeous! I envy you!

Thank you, Casey!

Envirogirl, have fun with your lessons! What discipline do you ride? Oh, and, BTW--I did vote for you earlier. Good luck with the contest!

Hijack away on the color stuff, guys--I find it totally fascinating! See, I come from the world of Hunters, where plain 'ol boring BAY is like, 90% of the horses in the ring!! Totally figures I would buy a horse that was 50% Paint and it would still be a plain bay!

One day I want something with spots!!

Just for fun and because we're OT anyway (and it's my thread, so it's cool for me to hijack, right?

) here's my other plain bay girl. She's TB/Trakehner, 10 yrs old this year. First pic is us at a Hunter show a few years ago, second pic is us at a dressage lesson (don't mind me, I'm very pregnant in the second pic). She's boring bay, but I love her anyway!

The day you go to a dressage or hunter/jumper competition on an App. make sure to share lots of pictures!! LOL

I know when I was riding with a large group of die-hard western riders, I would hear a lot of grief about the english riders and their "boring plain ol' colors". LOL

You have some beautiful horses! I still need to get those pictures of BlackJack, I always forget. I have his "before" pictures but I don't wanna post them without his "after" pictures. He looks pretty rough in his first pics.
