Gun control and the second amendment....

Sad to think that some of these children that survived may end up in a mental hospital later in life because of this man. Traumatized forever.

People will remember this tragedy for a while. The population as a whole is not living in fear of another mass shooting, robbery, home invasion, or being robbed at gun point. The families will always remember this day same for the families who suffered from 9/11.

Yes 2 weeks it will be on the back of peoples minds unless there is media coverage about a law trying to pass that relates to guns.

Well, I hope that's not the way it will go. It's quite simple, isn't it? Rapid firing rifles are easy to get. People are being massacred, frequently now it seems, with rapid fire rifles. There is no need for a civilian to own, possess or steal a rapid firing rifle. Therefore, it's time to curtail the sale and possession of rapid fire rifles in order to reduce the number of deaths caused with them. Let the big kids go to the amusement arcade or buy a computer game instead instead.

Hemet, you know full well that McVeigh not using a gun has nothing to do with the gun debate. The Wayne waddlers seem to be getting desperate in their arguments. Perhaps they see the writing on the wall now.

You are right... gun control won't stop gun violence, but it will lessen it...

If you believe that you also must believe that prohibition cured alcoholism and stopped people from drinking.. Not to mention all the drug laws we have that stopped the illegal drug problems here in America, not to mention legal ones. More laws seldom and most cases never cure a problem.

Irrelevant argument! And your final sentence is, as you must realise, incorrect.

I don't think that anyone is suggesting the complete 'prohibition of guns'. Its absolutely clear, though, that the US needs better controls over guns, their users and where they are carried.

Actually it is. What is the factor in all those? People not the vehicle.

As far as complete prohibition of guns, there are some that would love to see that. More so in the state which I reside. But no matter what the situation, PEOPLE are always the unmitigated central factor. People have no self control and make choices, bad ones. They choose to drink and then drive, they choose to take drugs. You don't start out an addict. This mans mother chose not secure the weapons knowing her son had difficulty coping with life.He decided to kill all those children with those guns, if not those guns maybe some other ones.

I seen this morning on the news that Obama wants the ban on assault rifles reinstated. I'm not sure if and how they can accomplish this, but I do agree with it. With that said , my whole family, myself included, owns guns, but I have never had any use for the assault rifle or much less anything semi-automatic. My point of view is that if ANY of these shooters would have been armed with say just a bolt action rifle or a pump shotgun, there would have been way less damage done. Less bullets, less killing. I know if anyone is hell bent on doing harm they will, but this will reduce the chance in many ways.

In Utah, schools are prohibited from having any anti-gun laws and schools must allow those with legal weapons and permits to carry guns. Subsequently, there are teachers that are armed. This includes the students when they come of age to legally possess a gun and it is permissible for college students to carry in class.

In January, 2012, two Utah students devised a plan to bomb their school. Thankfully, they were caught before they could act.

I've not found any evidence of school shootings in Utah and I would think the fact that any teacher could be armed - or student at the college level - would be a deterrent. The students planning to bomb the school indicates to me that those determined to do damage will try to find a way. They knew they couldn't be successful as shooters as they would be taken out early in the game so bombing was the only way to do mass damage.

Mental health is the primary issue and those determined to kill will continue to do so until mental health is addressed.

Sorry, but it's not absolutely clear that we need better controls over firearms. The better controls that are needed are not for restricting law abiding citizens like myself, but the mentally ill that perpetrate these atrocities. There were warning signs with every one of these last several shooters but it is not in vogue to look at mental health. Getting people the help that they need is not nearly as important to the mainstream media as it is to deal with a controversial ban. But again, the medications that these people take, SSRIs to be specific, make a lot of money for big pharma and for them to admit that psychosis can occur as a result of them would open up a whole bunch of lawsuits.

We also have laws on the books as to who can legally own firearms. Have you ever filled out a 4473? I am asking seriously. The form is at http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-4473-1.pdf It is the standard form that is completed prior to any gun sale and I have completed many of them. Most of these answers are verified when an NICS background check is performed. I will be filling another out later this week.

As for where firearms are carried, every major shooting has been in a gun free zone. Signs don't stop criminals, just law abiding citizens. The mentality is, "Let's put up a sign. It'll make it a safer place." It doesn't.

As has been expounded upon many times over, there was a reason that the second amendment was put into the constitution and it has nothing to do with hunting, target shooting, or even home defense.

The shooter, in the Newtown CT school shooting, tried unsuccessfully to buy a gun just prior to the shooting. Existing gun control laws prevented the purchase. He then took guns that were not his & committed this atrocity. Aren't there already laws prohibiting taking things that aren't yours?
I'm an NRA member, a life long hunter & an avid target shooter. I like guns. I think they're beautiful tools. All of my guns were legally acquired & as required by law the handgus are registered. I have never, and in all liklihood never will, shoot another human being. The same is true of virtually all other legal gun owners. The vast majority of gun violence is committed by people who have no right to own the gun they used.
The old bumper stickers 'If guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns" & " Guns don't kill people, people kill people" are trite to be sure but they remain valid. Tragic events like the one in Newtown skew the discussion. Our problem is not with guns, it's with values. These mass shootings are a recent cultural event. Go back as little as 50 years & these things didn't happen even though gun ownership was as widespread then as it is today. What is different? Single parent homes are now the norm rather than the exception. God has been taken out of schools & out of public life. We have, as Daniel Patrick Moynihan said "defined deviancy down" to the point where many of the old values & beliefs no longer exist.
We, as a culture have some seriouss problems, but laying the blame for them on inanimate objects is too simple. Remove all the "assault weapons" & we remain a sick society. We need to strengthen families, promote parenting as a verb as well as a noun & go back to teaching our children that right & wrong do exist. Moral relativism can't continue to be the framework for people's decision making.
