As someone that has worked Animal Damage Control, here's what I suggest.
Walk slowly towards the cage and drape the cage with a dark blanket. Then slowly and steadily move the cage to the final destination.

Final destination, for a skunk that is either a large enough body of water to completely submerge the cage, or a gas chamber.

As for shooting it, have to go with a heart/lung hit, and it's still not guaranteed that it won't spray, otherwise it WILL spray. Also you're shooting through a cage, which means the odds of hitting a wire is great, which means a skunk that sprays.

For the people that is saying that drowning is cruel, stop anthropomorphizing animals. Skunks do not have the concept of drowning that humans have.

Actually, none of us are sure what a skunks perception of drowning is. But I still imagine drowning sucks. Call an animal removal person, or the local game warden. That way you're not breaking any laws, and you don't have to deal with the ugly parts.

My FIL and DH are trappers. They have drowned things and they both will tell you that any of those animals will fight like mad to save its life. It knows it is dying and a quick painless death is just alot better unless you are one of those who gets off on watching things die.... Shooting it is as easy as pie, unless you don't know how to handle a gun. Even I have shot several things through a trap. Shoot it in the head and it is lights out...stops moving except for a death twitch or two...even if it doesn't kill it instantly (which I am most sure it is almost instant, if not instant) then it is knocked out instead of thrashing in water for its life.

So what method do these paragons of virtue use? Leghold? Snare? Maybe gassing or drowning could be better then what they use. What do they trap?
An animal will struggle when it's trapped - it doesn't think that it's dying, it's thinking it's got to get the hell out of there.
I just want to say that everyone has their beliefs and opinions and how they deal with the predators are up to them.

I always thought a skunk releases its' scent no matter how it dies.

I say dont kill it since you have to learn how to get along with other creatures in this world.

Cover it and if you move slowly you can open it and release as suggested.

I am surprised how quickly people kill everything when something is around that can kill their birds. Hypocritical----do onto others.........

I agree with Cassie and the world would be a better place if people tried to get along with wild animals. Maybe they could start small with the wild animals and slowly work their way up to getting along with human beings. World might be a better place.

The best way to kill a skunk with out spraying is to get a 50cc sugrine with a hypodermic needle. Fill it with acctone and stick it in the lungs and dump 20cc or so into the lungs. It will die very quick.

I agree, I would adore it if we could all sit back and commune with nature, heck I'd even sing with the birds and dance with the flowers.

Alas this is not Disney, and in this world these animals wish to eat my chickens, spray my pets and bite my children. None of that is a peacefull communing with nature. No one puts a coop & run together and thinks "wow, that's shoddy, but I can always go all Elmer Fudd on wildlife". Part of being a mother is keeping my kids safe, and that includes keeping animals that may carry rabies and diseases away from them and my property. Part of being a good citizen is not taking my problem and dumping it off to be someone else's problem.

Once the cute wildlife is content to stay in the wild, and not come up to my home, then they are safe.
