i had a bear rip the side of my barn off

I'm so sorry. That's insane, I didn't know they could do that. You said earlier that your hens aren't laying but the odd egg a day, right? I hope they are okay ad start laying again soon.. Poor things. I remember what a bloody mess my coop was, i can't imagine a bear attack How are you going to/have you already reinforce(d) the barn? do you plan on hatching more chicks or are you going to hang out and wait for a while?

Sex link color pattern from what I read up on were Chipmunk pattern ( strip on head and down back ) with black eyeliner for the females and the males had white dots on their heads and or were more muted in color.

Mmm... not really. I just like to be contrary to Mike.

I had a duck in a dog crate for half a year, but she was a one-legged duck that could not stay outside. The average bird likes being outside way more than they like being in the house. Jace, my OEGB, being an exception---she'd live in the house if I let her.

the bear was in the spring, i got more birds, i reinforced the side of the barn and rearranged the electric fencing

this fall i had a pack of coyotes come in and take 20 birds one day and 5 another day
i am down to 10 birds (1CCL hen, 1 oegb/silkie mutt hen, 2 FBCM cockerels, 1 birchen marans cockerel, 2 EE hens, 1 splash marans pullet, 1 icelandic pullet, and something i cant remember.....)

Sorry to hear this, I hadn't heard that you had a coyote issue this fall.

How did candling go for everyone?

Horrid for the brinsea!!! Out of 7 eggs, 5 had quit! FIVE! I had started them all in Uglybator and then moved them to the brinsea in the classroom on day 5. I literally walked 2 blocks with them snugly wrapped in an egg carton and towel, and set them in the brinsea. I calibrated both incubators with the same thermometer! No idea why they died but I've had the most rotten luck with that stupid brinsea mini! Luckily I had two spare eggs in the uglybator to switch out, but still! I turned up the temp from 99.6 to 100.2. Hopeing that helps or something! Its hard because its in the classroom so I cant fiddle with it.

In better news Uglybator has 30 eggs going strong. I go into lockdown tomorrow for them! And the kindergartners LOVED watching me candle a couple eggs for them.
