HALLOWEEN HATCH!!! Anyone

pfftt... i still don't know what my humidity is...

i bought one of the car wash type sponges today and i'm going to put that in tomorrow...
i should use warm water when i soak it... will i need to get it wet again before the hatch?? or probly not?? not like the water can easily evaporate.... it's a styrofoam box?? or am i gonna need to do the plastic tubing thing to add water to the sponges??

The water will evaporate especially if you have low humidity in the house. Do you have a turkey baster? (Yes, in a way it is in poor taste. lol) If so, put your sponge under one of the vent holes and wet it with the baster periodically. I usually keep a yogurt cup or coffee mug under the other hole and refill it with the baster. Something short enough to fit without hitting the top and tall enough to discourage the peeps from jumping in the water. The first time around, I used one of those flaring Greek yogurt cups.

Edit: Oops! I forgot to add, if you can measure the temperature of your water then try to get around 100*F. If not, go for room temperature or tepid water rather than warm or cold. I tried warm water once and accidentally bumped my incubator air temp up way high.

i've got a digital meat thermometer that we use for the smoker.. i can get hot water out of the tap and let it cool too 100.... i'll put the sponges in a shallow bowl so they soak up the water but are easy to re-soak... and i'm gonna cross my fingers and let nature do her thing...
there wouldn't be much humidity for a broody hen out here i wouldn't think... but i really have no clue yet... lol..
i'm gonna get a broody hen and put readers in the nest this summer.. just for giggles.. see what she gets....

That's what I've wondered. We have hatched far more chicks with a much better hatch rate under broodies than we have in the incubator (though I'm getting better) and no one adjusts their humidity. But I have seen the rather awful outcome of a drop in atmospheric humidity that sucked the moisture out of my incubator. The same day, Josephine hatched her second brood of the year (3 this time) without a problem. They've gotta have something we don't.

If you don't have a turkey baster, you can use a straw, or even a ketchup bottle (the kind you take on a picnic, with the long nose) ... Actually I have a long piece of tubing, and I squirt the water into it with the ketchup bottle.

ETA: after this hatch I am selling my 2 Hovabators. I am gonna go buy that Sportsman tomorrow!
