Halloween ~ Hatch Day!

I though technically if you set the eggs before noon on a day that is considered day 1, is that right? I set on Oct 10th at 7:45AM. Won't the 31st be the 21st day?

Forgot to add that we are on chick watch again. A MEAN broody is sitting on 4 eggs due to hatch today, last night I heard one chirping through its shell.

Also, check out my other thread of the Yamboree my daughter was in, lots of pics.

You only count the first day as '0' when you set the eggs in the evening. If they are set in the morning, then that is day '1'!

I posted here about a week ago, about taking some ice cold eggs away from my broody. Another hen had evidently been trying to lay eggs with her, and some eggs had been pushed out in the scuffle. The hen is in such a small area, that she faces the wall, so evidently she didn't see them. I brought 5 in, and out of those there are 4 pips developing!! 1 looks like a blood ring, but they are nowhere near developed like they should be! They look to be a few days behind. I guess I'll have to put them on their sides and turn them by hand for a few days, to make sure they are turned enough. Maybe I'll post (yet) another question about turning? Ugh, I am thinking seriously about not letting the hens hatch the eggs!!

ok, then, they are due on Halloween. I set them about 10 - 11am. Is that the time they may start hatching? Can you candle them close to that date?

Luck with the bator Kelley! It's 38 here this morning. I find it weird that the bad eggs don't stink... even though they've been heated for two weeks. Really strange.

I have to use this bator for awhile, things are tight... And the addiction, tempting. But I'm going to learn to use this dumb little thing effectively. Once it's paid for itself a few times, I'll move on.

I can see why hatching takes on a life and addiction of it's own. boy am I hooked. Those dark wiggling shadows call to you like magnets to your soul.

Prayers for good hatches and good luck.

Chere

We were at 32 degrees outside and 54 inside...maybe the heat will be turned on tomorrow???

Oil is just insane right now!

I know what you mean about budgets being tight... my daughter bought all of her supplies to make her 'bator (other than the thermostat) and I used some money in my Paypal account for mine (I sell things I don't need and then have spending money in my Paypal for things I want...I used to jokingly call it my "pin money"....now it's my "egg money"!

shelleyd2008- Why would it matter if you hand turn or not? Just curious!

Just candled mine. I'm at day 14 for 1 set: only 2 swimmers out of 12 eggs.
Day 12 for the 2nd set: 6 swimmers and 3 possibles out of 14 eggs.
Not too bad for a first time.

But I think I've caught the bug- have 18 more coming. LOL

Funny, I was thinking the other day that I would shift my chicken money into paypal to keep track of it!!! Too cool.

I have one egg not in a carton because the airsac is in the middle and I - and apparently NOT the chick either, can tell which end is which. All the others are hanging out in cartons. Day 16 for chickens. IF being kept at just around 99, sometimes lower, slows them down then they'll be late. The turkey even later. The tension is enough to make you

My temp & humidity took a dive last night. Our temp this morning when I got up was 28* The horse & goat water tanks had about 1/4 inch of ice on them! I guess it is time to run the space heater in the bathroom where my bator it.

Ok, I took my bad eggs outside & cracked them open. 3 were scrambled, 1 had a quitter & the other 2 had blood rings. Yup & no stinky eggs!

I will candle them again in about 2 days.

Hey, walkswithdog - what kinda turkeys are you hatching? (If you already told us, sorry...I didn't go back thru all the posts.) Have you hatched turkeys before? I've heard they are harder to hatch.

I was wondering because we have narragansetts. I want to hatch the eggs this spring.

Thanks.
