Halloween ~ Hatch Day!

Quote:
1) The two eggs that looked filled with water either were not fertile or did not develop for some reason or another.
2) The one with the line of floating blood is more than likely what is known as a blood ring.
3) The ones with blobs are the chicks! If you tilt the egg when candling so the big end is down more, and shine the light through the air sac, you should be able to see the veins in the area that is real close to the air sac.
4) I think I understand what you mean. The egg looks fine, until you shine the light in correct? These are most likely pores in the egg that are too large, or too many, also known as a porous shell. These can hatch, but it really depends on how big the pores are. I have a standard cochin that lays eggs like that. I am sure most her eggs are fertile, but only about half ever start developing. It just makes the egg more susceptible to infection, and easier to dry out. But it can be done.

What day are you on again? I wouldn't toss any eggs until at least day 14. Unless you have a stinker. By then you will know for sure which are developing and growing, and which aren't.

Did you mark these eggs as questionable? If not, get out your pencil and start writing!! That way, the next time you candle you will know for sure which eggs you were not clear on.

<edited because I can't type worth a doody tonight!

What is a penedesencas?

My dad was wondering about the quail too. He thought the Bob Whites were good to eat. I saw another post saying that the coturnix was stringy meat? But others have said it was good meat. So if you hatch quail, when do you butcher them....at what age?

Most quail are at adult size around 6-8 weeks I believe. I have never eaten any, but I will if my Texas A&M cortunix hatch out!! More than 2 or 3 that is!! Won't do me any good to eat my flock!

Shelley D....
1) then I need to get rid of the eggs that look like there is water in them? correct? or wait a couple of days?

2) Blood ring needs to come out, correct? or wait a couple of days?

Yes I did mark on the eggs if they were suspicious.
We are on day 4 now. I will look at them again Friday, day 7.
Thanks!

Oh, & why are marans so expensive??? Are they hard to hatch?

No marans are no harder to hatch then any other but they are harder to candle. On day 10 I check to make sure there is a air sac just about all you can see in the really dark ones. I guess the reason they are expensive is because law says you can no longer import birds in from out of the country so they are hard to get and in great demand. I have Wheatons in right now staggered with welsummers and cant see through their eggs let alone a copper marans

I would wait on all of them until day 14 to toss any, unless you find a weepy or stinky one. The clear ones just might be too hard to see, and the blood ring is most likely a blood ring, but when I had one a few weeks ago, people had told me that they had some hatch that looked like blood rings. I would just wait to toss till you know for sure. Look at them as much as you want, but by day 14, if they aren't developing, you will know for sure. By then the chicks should be taking up most of the egg.

As far as Marans go, I think they are just a very popular breed right now. It's all supply and demand. The more the demand, the more the supply costs

Plus I believe they are a rare breed, at least in this country. I haven't seen anyone say they were hard to hatch, but I haven't done them, so I don't know for sure. Maybe you should post a seperate thread, and ask the rest of us chicken addicts?

We are officially one if this group now! woohoo!
Chickies are due October 30th! I just candled them They are on day 5 and I just candled them... and saw veins!

Midnight has been broody for over 2 months and I finally put 2 fresh eggs under her last Friday. They are from my leghorn girls, Rusty is the father. It should be interesting to see what they look like! I am hoping for pullets.

Wait until I tell Celeste that this time it looks good!

How is everyone doing???

My temps are holding steady and Humidity is great! My bator is in my closet and has really been just chugging along

Today is the FIRST day I have to actually LEAVE MY BABY CHICKIE'S UNATTENDED!!!!!!!!!

I have to take my DD to therapy and will be gone for 3 hours! ACK!

I think my husband is taking off work early today so that should help...I hope he is...of course not for that reason although I wonder...hmmmm.....

I candled last night and since I have NO idea what I am doing...here is the consensus I came to...

1-clear
4-veins
3-all I could see where shadows of the yolk. Hopefully they are good.
3-possible blood rings (hopefully veins on 2 - pretty sure 1 is blood ring The look like red circles..but I am thinking it is poss. it may be veining?? Will wait and see!)
1-has 2 air pockets??

My temps only ran stable at 99-100, sometimes down to 98.6. That's the water wiggler temp. I candled a number of them today. The turkey eggs may only have two really going well. One looks clear. The other three are harder to tell.

One of the araucana definitely has a good sized flipper in it, the other two show veining and a shadow.

One blue orp egg shows better veining than the other.

And none of the barred rocks are clear! All show veining and shadows and/or veining and flippers waving at me!

I've got one egg with an air cell at midway down.

The air cells are about right, I'm doing it dry, humidity staying between 30 and 35 without messing with it.

In a ghastly mistake one of the turkey eggs touched the heater part. I don't know for how long or how badly. Sigh.

I'm very encouraged despite a rough start getting the temp stable once eggs were added, that I'm seeing progress. The whole thing (except for mistakes) makes me grin like an idiot.

I have never seen on with 2 air sacs!! Do you have a pic of that? Is it, or could it be, a double yolk? I have heard they can have 2 air sacs.

Quote:
Were these shipped eggs? That can make the air sac seperate from the shell. Actually makes all the insides move around, but same idea.

When you first put the eggs in the bator, the temp will get a bit squirrelly!
