Hamburg thread!

Here are my Silver Pencilled Hamburgs. They are still young so I'm hoping that when they molt their pencilling will be better, not to mention my cockeral will loose a lot of that black!

(Love the SPHs! I'm getting sort of avaricious about the breed!)

I promised Urbanfarmgirl to post photos of the cockeral I got from her three weeks ago, and then evilly neglected to do so. Here he is today at twelve weeks:

I'll be moving him in with his harem before the end of the month; before that I'm enclosing another 6X12 chunk of territory for their use; more will be added before winter.

Since no-one's posted here for a bit, I thought I'd throw in a shot of Maggie, Terre and Suzzy and comment on one major difference between them.

Maggie, on the left, is a month older than the other two, and spent at least a month longer competing for feed with a pen which included Brahmas; when you look straight down at the three of these pullets, (who are about seven and eight months old now) she's a good couple of inches narrower and maybe three inches shorter, neck to tail, than the other two. Terre, who started laying a couple of weeks later than Suzzy, is not only longer but slightly more heavy-bodied, for values of "heavy bodied" which apply to birds as petite as Hamburgs.

Also, I spent most of June freaking out about tails, but apparently the beautiful spotted fan takes a while to develop; Suzzy's is brand new, and I'm sure Terre's will follow.

I'm getting 18-20 eggs a week from the three of them, and much enjoyment. I haven't taken a photo of their fiance Elvis this week, and won't have time until tomorrow, but he seems to get bigger every time I look at him, and every day his spangling is more pronounced, although now I'm worried about his tail.

Wanted to update the main Hamburg thread and give an idea of the growth of my little boy, who just started crowing this week- and thinks it's the best idea ever to crow for an hour or so around 10am, just because he can!
