Hamburg thread!

Silver Spangled Hamburgs are one of my favorite breeds. I also keep Buckeyes and they are as different as night and day. They don't even flock together. I teasingly call them "Silver Spangled Nutjobs" because they are so much flightier than the Buckeyes. They are also some of the prettiest chickens I've seen. If the SPs are anything like my SSs, you will enjoy them for their zippy personality and reliable egg laying.

Lol! "Silver Spangled Nutjobs", I agree with everything you said about the SSH. We don't have any other breeds, but we have a small flock of SSH's and we love them so much! They certainly are entertaining and, yes very lovely! I love our roo, too. He's such a great guardian for the girls!

If anyone in the Central Texas area is interested, I'd like to rehome him...10 months old from Murray McMurray.

I'm a 4-H member that's looking for a pair of show quality silver hamburgs I've been looking for a while with no luck anybody have any for sale???? please help me I live in northwest Ohio. please PM me if you have any.

Hi!

I have two Silver Hamburgs that are 2 months old. We got them as newly hatched chicks at the same time (28March) from the same batch (from Wilco who got them from Privett). However, one of them is half the size of the other. She still seems to be developing, just really slowly. She eats and excretes normally and they are on chick starter. They were nearly the same size as newly hatched chicks.

Has anyone ever had this with their hamburgs? Does anyone have any advice on what to feed her or how to get her to start growing normally?

I assume they're both female since they haven't had any comb growth or color. They have almost an absence of comb, actually. The larger one has a small bump (since we got her), like the very start of a straight comb that never grew into anything, but other than that, nothing. (Also, they look like hamburgs to me, but someone please tell me if they aren't! We already had the surprise of getting silver laced wyandottes instead of Anconas from Wilco!).

The two of them together:

The little one's wings kind of hang like this most of the time:

She fits in the palm of your hand and weighs a half (or less) than the other:

Thanks!

We have 13 pullets and 1 roo that were all hatched at the same time, we got them from Murray, most of them are around the same size but two are much smaller and a few are quite a bit larger, they are around ten months old now. They didn't all grow at the same rate. Some of them developed combs and wattles months before the others. One didn't develop hers until well after everyone else had theirs. The roo developed way before everyone else did. :)

I was concerned as they were growing because of the discrepancy, but a wise person on BYC said to view them as we do ourselves, all unique! As long as she's healthy, she should catch up even if she doesn't get as large, she will develop.

ETA - I don't know about the dropped wings. None of mine ever did that.

Thanks I'll look for some closer because I'm afraid of shipping in the heat that far but if I can't find any closer by fall I will get back with you. And I forgot I wanted them as Bantam are these?

Colton,

I've been in contact with a breeder in Michigan because I've been looking for LF SSHs. Most all the ones I see for sale are bantam size and I want something with a little more heft to them. My daughter's friend in 4H won first place at the Morrow Co. fair with a pair of SSHs bantams her dad bought at auction. I think it was the Mt. Hope auction where he got them, but you might check some of the swaps around. There were quite a few SSH bantams at the Ohio National the last couple years, so if you can wait until November, you should be able to find plenty of folks willing to sell you some. I ordered some from Meyer, but their tails were pretty smutty and the spangles weren't as distinct as they needed to be. It's a hard color to get just right, but when it's right, it's a gorgeous, snappy looking bird. I love 'em.

Here's my LF SSH from Murray McMurray hatchery.
