Are they peeping etc? I don't think they are ready from what I can see as there's still veins. Moisten the membrane I always use coconut oil it lasts longer. Do you have a incubator? I'm in the middle of helping a duckling too

Im using a emergency incubator I had for all my leftovers last week. Was just worried about how tight the membrane was compared to the others I've had to help with in the last week. They killed another one before I noticed they left. I have them under heatlamp at 100 with wet paper towels and I've been wetting the membrane. Can I use veg oil? I used the last of coconut oil for impacted crop in chicks last night. Springs are hard for a newbie! They are both peeping.

What are you doing with the wet paper towels? Mine had the exact same so I carefully snipped the dried bits of membrane off as it was tight which made it easier. I don't see why not with the veg oil just make sure to get none on it's bill. Are they making a yawning motion or opening its mouth?

No no yawning i dont think just like nibbling a little bit or peeping. I have the paper towels around the opening to keep membrane wet. What does yawning mean?

Vaseline or non pain relief neosporin works great to keep membranes moist.

The duck hatchers say if they are yawning they are absorbing yolk.

Personally, I would say the inner membrane is definitely drying out and could be on their way to shrink wrapping. A fully shrinkwrapped chick, I would assume the same would be true for ducklings, is pulled right down into the bottom half of the egg as the membrane shrinks. These looks like they are still up nice and high in the egg.

I just posted about this problem elsewhere, but then I saw this thread!

I discovered a totally unexpected hatching in the middle of happening in a tire in my backyard today. Three of seventeen eggs have hatched and several have pipped, but I'm mostly concerned about this one.

As you can see it's made some progress, but hardly any more since four or five hours ago. The exposed bits of membrane are totally dry, its wing is nearly poking out, and it's just sitting there. The mom hasn't been covering this one, it and the three hatched chicks are in the tire next to her. Temperature is definitely not an issue (unless it's too hot!) but humidity might be.

Should I try to help it hatch? Any suggestions? I have work at 6 am tomorrow and I'm anxious about leaving it.

Definitely continue its zip around the air cell end and pull the cap off. It will most likely kick right out in your hand, so be prepared to catch!
If they stop mid-zip for more than an hour, they usually have tired out and quit. If its still alive, its ready to come out, but let it kick out on its own. Hopefully the yolk is fully absorbed.

Thanks. I followed your suggestion. It didn't kick out, but the membrane was dry even under the shell, so I continued...eventually it sort of fell out of the remaining shell. The yolk is fully absorbed, thankfully. Now it's lurching around a little like they do, and mostly dried already. Whoohoo! Four down, up to thirteen to go. Hopefully nobody else needs interference.
