Hands on hatching and help

You would think..lol..mine usually stay about 12 to 18 hours and then they're gone....

I figured it all out. I took the last egg with the pip and stuck it in the incubator to keep my last pipped egg company and because I was going to take one of her chicks anyway to fill a order. I moved mom and babies to the pen I had all ready and set up for them. They are doing great now. There's no lips and ledges or ramps...it's right on ground level and the chicks can come out from under mama, have access to food and water (when ready) and then get right back under mom. Crisis adverted!

The ducks can't get out of shell they don't break the shell. Why would I put a hole in a egg that didn't open buy itself. Wouldn't I be making it worse it wasn't ready or not going to hatch any way you put it. You don't help in Wild. They do it on there own or the mother helps correct. My understanding of it.

This thread is to support and help the hatchers that want to intervene to help save the lives of animals they are trying to hatch. Sometimes in nature chicks do not develop or loose their egg tooth before being able to break through the shell. They are otherwise perfectly healthy. By creating a hole you can save their life and they can go on to be a healthy member of the flock.

Okay, I'll do that this evening when I turn and it's darker so I can candle and take a couple of pictures.  You sitting down?  Out of the 16 you sent me, 1 had a blood ring, and I broke one the first day.  I have a total of 14 that are still going strong!!  Yep, 14!!!  Ain't that exciting???  As of Day 12 there were dancing embryos in every single egg!  Hard to tell now, because as I said the eggs are now mostly dark inside.  But I am so sure that we are going to get a good hatch this time!

So glad I took the chance and ordered eggs from you! After the dismal results before I thought I was done and never trying it again.  You made the entire process so easy, and you, Amy, and so many others have been so patient with me while I worked up the courage to try one more hatch.  Now, what the heck am I going to with 14 Silkies???  :lau

Wow!! :celebrate you totally deserve an awesome shipped hatch!!

Well, I just checked my Muscovy egg again. Before, there was sometimes movement if I tapped the wall near the egg or moved the incubator slightly (this egg is the only one in there). But a lot of the time there was no movement for a while. Now - there is a regular in/out movement, like breathing. I can't hear any cheeping or tapping but I guess it would only be making that kind of a movement if it had pipped and was breathing air?

Separately, I had to cull one of my 2 turkey poults today. :(. She was wobbly on her feet from the start and somehow today the skin had split over her ankle joint and there was exposed joint. The doctor in me said that would be a huge infection risk and it'd never heal, plus it would be super sore, so she's gone off to chicky heaven. So sad. Anyone else ever have that?

I have to go against what everyone else said here. In my experience that in & out "breathing" motion against the membrane never has ended well. They usually quit within 24 hours of me seeing that. I hope I'm wrong! :hugs

Usually my ducks lay in the shavings in the house so they're fine, but if they don't lay until they're in the yard they either dig a fresh hole (damp dirt/mulch) or lay in the mud next to the water... :/

I'd get some little Red Wiggler worms to start him with first, just make sure you give him some grit... I ususlly wait til they're half to kostly feathered before trying the fish... that way they can swim longer after them and you don't have to cut it short if he gets too waterlogged...

:gig
Yes, they absolutely recognize momma and their flock compared to an intruder... they are extremely intelligent and you can train them too...
I've hatched a 3 week old egg at set time before... and I have a 2 week old shipped egg developing now... the more humid it is where you are, the smaller the air cell stays and viability time increases...

I've hatched old eggs with really good results too. Where can I get red wiggled worms? He's getting so big, Ravyn!! I gotta get new pics. His "color"/feathers are starting to come in!!

You're eggs are backwards!!! That's how I tell everything is going all right. As long as I can see the "hump" in the high side going up and down, at hatch time, I'm happy!!!

So I have an off topic question for you guys, just because I am curious. I joined the BYC FB page a week or so ago and one post a person put up a pic of a sign (from California) Pasture Raised Eggs -$8.00 a dozen, $4.00 1/2 dozen. I'm not dumb enough to know for most of us that's

. But for those who do sell chicken eggs, how much do you sell them for?? I'm doing good to get $2.00 a dozen in these parts. The grocery store is selling at just over a dollar a dozen and people around here would rather pay less for store eggs than even a quarter more for farm fresh. I have 3 regular customers and a couple "sometime" customers.

I won't even pretend..lmao..there may be a small halo there somewhere, but the horns block it

Mine was dented and warped perched on horns... but I lost it when it didn't come back after throwing it at too many people...

Awesome!! Would love to see the feathers!! As you no doubt noticed, they get all their belly feathers first, then shoulder sprigs, lol...

Red Wigglers can be found anywhere they sell bait and tackle... pet shops usually carry them too... along with mealworms... the little mealworms would be great for him to try too...

Just don't give him too much, too often... too much protein and he could get 'angel wing'...

*sorry for the typos earlier, didn't even see those* :/

Eating eggs around here are a dime a doz, lol... I don't even bother selling those... our 2 good neighbors I give eggs to...

Although, my OH has a few people he works with that pay $4 per doz...

ETA: btw, AmyL, you've probably seen my OH on that FB page... :gig
