Hands on hatching and help

RubyNala97 your instinct was right. The Muscovy egg that had breathing type motions last night didn't make it. Very sad but hopefully we'll have a clutch under momma duck later in the summer. I was wondering how we'd have integrated a lone baby duckling into the flock.

Drama drama here today. My one surviving turkey poult that hatched Thurs has been doing well. Its sibling had to go to chicky heaven yesterday as it just wasn't right and it had a bad leg. I went to clean the brooder out earlier this afternoon having been out all morning. The baby was lying motionless on the floor - it somehow had escaped the brooder (I've never had a chicken escape this brooder!). It's still pretty chilly here and it was totally lifeless, glazed eyes, and its neck was arched right back and its legs extended. It looked a total goner. Well, it was still breathing so I had to try. I got my hairdryer on a medium heat to warm it on a fluffy towel and then popped it into the incubator. I really expected it wouldn't do anything. But wow that baby surprised me. Slowly slowly it perked up, started off moving its legs into a more normal position, then lifting its head, then cheeping, then standing. It's only gone and started walking around and eating again!!!!!!!! I might have to name it Jon Snow

I originally put in 7 (the first 7 laid after my Roos death), 4 were fertile but it appears that only two may hatch.
I never intended to incubate eggs, I was very happy with just my little flock but when my Roo was killed by a predator, I was emotionally driven to have some of his offspring. I tried to get a hen to go broody but that didn't work so without any knowledge I bought an incubator and threw the eggs in it, which was a very immature way to go about it and probably why I am having such a low hatch rate. I just hate that my inexperience effects the life/death of another being and the thought of ruining lives makes me fearful of attempting this journey again. I'm just going to snuggle and appreciate the ones I have

You did what you could and at least you have some babies, like you said. But you do have a new incubator now. if you change your mind you know where to find us and we can get you through the whole incubation and hatch!

I'm sorry. I've seen many eggs like that and when they still haven't started hatching after their due date, they eventually just give up.
I'm glad to hear about the turkey! I found a lifeless newly hatched chick on my neighbors farm. It was laying there cold and I thought it was dead but it was still breathing. So I stuck it in my bra, walked home, put it under a light and a few hours later it came back to life. Then started drinking and eating and running around. I returned it to the mother hen the next day. It's amazing how they bounce back. I only saw the first episode of this season so far but I knew he came back to life! He's to cute to kill off!

#2 looks gone

Is there any sticky fluid coming from the pip on the wrong end one? As long as there's a hole so it can get air, and no sticky fluid for it to breathe in and isn't bleeding bad (usually there's a little with wrong end ones) but should be fine ♡♡
I had 3 last hatch , 1 was sticky n I didn't catch it..other 2 hatched without help just fine ♡

That is true. I said that I am happy when I see the rise and fall of breathing in the high end of the air cell, and I am, BUT you just made me think, and if they haven't internally pipped within, I'd say 24 hours once they assume that position and have their "back" up in the high side, they don't seem to make it as much.

Make sure that he can breathe and the membranes stay moist and give him some time.

I'm not sure if the membrane is perforated. Should I try to cut it? She was breathing just a second ago when candled.

Soooo (she said nonchalantly as if it wasn't her burning question of the day) any truth to the rumors that Silkie eggs can have a tendency to be early hatchers? I only ask because if that's the case, I need to send poor Ken out in the rain to get the hatcher out of the hot tub room so I can get the heat and humidity steadied. I'd go out myself but I don't like the cold and rain. He doesn't like the cold and rain either, but I like doing his laundry even less so it's a trade-off. In 12 hours it'll be day 17. Oh, and a new, stronger flashlight shows that all 14 are still moving around inside the eggs! There is no way I can see that if all 14 hatch, there'll be adequate room for them in the Brinsea Oct 20, so I thought I'd take the pipped eggs and move them to the hatcher as I see them.

When I sat mine I set them at 10pm. I knew I had a couple that were advanced so I was trying to figure out if I wanted to "lockdown" before I went to bed, which would have been the very beginning of day 18 or wait until morning when I got up. So I candled them toward the end of day 17 and already had an internal pip. Now mind you- I use a styro bator and my temps run slightly high for the average so I usually see hatching starting by day 19, but even day 17 with internal pips was early for me. I had the first couple hatchers day 18 and then the rest were day 19/20. We were wondering if maybe those two had a little pre-incubation going on.

In general there is truth to the bantam and small eggs being more inclined to hatch a day or two early, but many people report theirs hatch the same day as standards too. I'd say better to be prepared than surprised, but it can go either way.
