Hands on hatching and help

400

Jennifer you should pip it, if this I'd 2days past due
I waited 3days on these two peeps&well a photo says a thousand words. They where well, active&wiggling they ran out of room shrunk down and suffocated. Amy Lyn was too nice&says maybe an infection in one on left(sacs coloration) but I've hatched enough now to know my lack of experience&knowledge killed them.(that was my first hatch). Thank heavens no one's locking me up for trying to hatch. (Fricken laws make me SICK) I strongly suggest you pip the shell&gently tug open a Nicole sized surface area of the shell(with tweezers sterilze&wash your hands&area before I start) pick a clean non vien spot on membrane. IF the chicks not dead already immediately the light& stimulation should stir it to want to un-egg itself. Hate to sit here&let a formed chick waste away if I can help. Just my two cents.
Be brave!

Ok maybe I should do that.. I wish I could see better.. it just seems like since it was the first to wiggle it should have hatched by now. All the others have.. :(

Regret is a horrible thing after the fact, I just don't want you looking back going, 'crud I coulda helped that little peep' as you learn more here on BYC. Experience is an amazing teacher!
(so are Banti&Amy lynn/Ruby&multiple others..SallySunshine has a ton of good stuff too when you can track her down lol

Not me...... I have an average 25% hatch rate.... I leave the educating to those who know better!

Ok, is anyone else seeing a raptor claw???? Wow, need to lay off the Jurrasic Park movies...lol Congrats on the hatcher!! Glad it was an easy assist. When do your kids get out of school for the summer?? (I know sooo totally out of the blue. Just curious...lol) And How is Jesse's arm?
Yes! It did look like a rapture claw!!! Lol. Monday is the last full day and then 3 half days and they are done!! No homework this week and my 10 year old was actually crying last night because "I'm bored"!! :he I made him go do laundry!! These kids! Jesse is doing good! Thanks for asking. He had a big infection in his scraped knee after a weekend at dads but he's on antibiotics and it's almost healed now.
Update- the one I pulled out is dry and happy in the brooder. 2 more have hatched, 2 more have externally pipped and look close to zipping and 2 more after that are wiggling with no holes.. :) doing good so far.. :)
You're doing really good for shipped eggs and your first time. Really, good job!!
So question? For my bantam silkies what day should I set them for lockdown? I know they can hatch early sometimes...
I usually lock down late, actually. But that's mostly because I forget. I candle once a day and look for draw down, then lockdown. If your temps haven't been on the high side they should hatch normal day 20/21.
They are great for putting the thermometers on to achieve the correct level of measurement. I like them because they are adjustable, cheap, and easy to clean. Besides, I figure it is time to make legos do some useful work in repayment for all the times humans have stomped on them! :lau
That's an idea. Going to try that!
Me too!! Lol

Ugh. I feel your pain lol. We usually have to spend about 2 hours putting my 2 year old back in bed every night and getting her to go to sleep

This has been going on since April. I have 3 older children and never had this phase go on longer than a week. None of our tactics work with her. Trust me, I've thought about duct tape lol.

This is why all my kids have slept with me till they are like 6 years old!
Oh, and some keet pictures! Plus bonus peachicks.

So cute!! I miss my peachicks. But not enough to want to brood them again with their crying! Lol!
That first pic is soooooo adorable!! I just want to snuggle that one!

I need to remind myself before I buy/set eggs to check the hatch dates to see what's going on during hatch!! It's the last full week of school and so many parties/ceremonies/concerts and I'm hatching call ducks. What was I thinking??!!

I will be posting lots of pics later. I have one adorable, very hyper little call duck in the brooder. He's alert and nosey and a little piggie, eating and drinking non stop. So cute!! 1 egg internally pipped and I made a safety hole but when I went to open the safety hole the next morning it was dead. No extra fluid or anything and a perfect little duckling with half absorbed yolk but absolutely no veins anywhere. No obvious reason for death. The next one was a doozy! Made safety hole, after 24 hours internal pip. Then waited another 24 to make hole bigger. Then slowly assisted another 24 hours. No progress on its own. Gave it an extra 12 hours to be safe. Membranes were clear and the poor thing was drying out inside the shell. I helped pull back a little membrane (it just wiped away) and got the little head out and put it back. Noticed it was trying to push out but had a huge blob of goo on the foot. I took it out and there was blood everywhere!! Long story short, got blood to stop, yolk was absorbed and it's resting. Very weak but it's hanging in there. Very scary seeing blood. I've never had a bleeder before! I'll get pics when it's all fluffed. 6 local call eggs are in lockdown. 1 external pip & (as of last night) 1 internal. Here we go again...

Thermometers oh-vey
I use 3or 4&they never all read same temp. Makes ya bonkers if you let it, searching for pea-eggs. Bet your tooshie I'm getting new thermometers. Taking this way serious.
