Hands on hatching and help

Yes all my eggs are shipped. I haven't found anyone local that has the eggs I want. :(

I can relate to that! We have no shortage of hatching eggs around my area, but I usually can't find what I'm looking for locally either. Plus it seems like I keep finding more and more breeds and varieties I "need" lol

Well today is lockdown for my sultans, magpie ducks, and turkey eggs. Gotta decide what to do with the ducks. I had gotten them so my goose could hatch something but all the eggs I put in her nest disappeared. I may try sliding one more under her to see what she does but this close to hatch I'd be very sad if she kicked it out. I might steal one of her infertile eggs and replace it so she doesn't realize an extra egg was added and see how that goes. I'm not gonna keep any I hatch though because it would be a pain trying to integrate them. My drake Hershey hates all newcomers. His mate is broody now so hopefully he'll be fine with the ducklings she hatches. Sugar is the broodiest pekin I have ever come across.

Ditto here! :D

Haha yup. I can't even count how many different breeds I have. I was just telling my husband I think we are going to need to down grade a bit. It's hard cause I want to keep all the chicks I hatch but I know we can't keep them all lol

I'm dreading integration with these hatchlings and my established duck flock. I want to keep adleast 4 out of these eggs though. 3 hens and 1 drake. I already have homes lined up for the others.

The most handling she's ever had from me is moving her to her broody quarters in the dark of night. I am dying to know what's going on underneath her but common sense dictates I should just let her do her thing.  In a week and a half all will be revealed!

You're very patient and I'm sure she appreciates that! They definitely prefer to be left alone

:highfive:

Well I think I can breathe again. Nothing like a chicken emergency to turn your evening upside down. My son was feeding and watering and called me out to check one of the young large fowl Cochin hens. Turns out she was egg-bound and badly prolapsed!!

So- after a cleaning and a couple of unsuccessful attempts of putting things back where they belong only to have her push it right back out, I had to try another method.
I put her in a bucket with warm water and some natural soap (Dr Bronner's) and soaked the prolapse and then went to work trying to get the egg out. Poor thing was really hurting. She would never have gotten that out on her own. The egg was trapped in a fold of tissue within another fold of tissue. I was finally able to find the opening and removed the little egg.
:th
I put some Vetracin on the tissue and put things back in. She was still cramping and pushing a bit but after a short time she seemed to relax. I have her in isolation so I'm hoping things will stay put and she will recover :fl
Whew.

During this procedure I also had a chick zipping too lol. I came back in to the house to a cute little Calico bantam Cochin

Wow your like a super hero lol. I definitely wouldn't know what to do in that situation! Hopefully she will heal up soon. :) congrats on the little chick. :)

What is the humidity and how big are the air cells? Misting depends on air cell size, if the air cells are too small, ducks can have a lot of goo left in the egg and cause issues at hatch... too small of air cells, mist at least once a day...
is that a problem under a broody? Can they not get enough humidity! I'm in tn and its humid here but I wonder if its just not enough under mama if that's what's possibly going on w our hatches?
