Hands on hatching and help

Pictures as promised!

First the keet that I was confused on that I now think is pearl pied and not royal purple (and who was very unhappy about this photoshoot):

The two pintos:

And lastly the little possible pinto of a different color, maybe lavender (the color is not 100% accurate here but maybe enough to make a guess at its color):

Oh, and you do guys remember the blue chick that hatched with the white head spot that I wondered if it was going to be barred? Here it is now:

Not barred, but the feathers are tipped with white at the ends. And a frizzle

And just for fun, this little guy is my future flock leader:

He's got big spurs to fill.

And I will now stop spamming the thread with pictures

They are pretty. Look at that comb on that little guy!!

So I was going through my emails and saw a junk mail for a tactical flashlight. Subject was something like "brightest flashlight in the world"....of course I thought about candling!

if I was hatching marans or something I may be tempted to buy it. I decided to set the eggs I had that were collected when I was on vacation. They are pretty old now, so not sure how many will develop. Also as I candled each egg as I was putting it in the incubator 3 of them had veins in them. So obviously those must have snuck by whoever was collecting and got sat on for awhile. There were a couple girls sitting when I got home and I'm sure it wasn't fun for someone who doesn't have chickens to stick their hand under the hen's butts looking for eggs!

So I set 21.

I think the same thing every time I see that ad! Yay for setting!! My hit 7 days today so I have to candle and mark air cells at some point.

I think you are right about the top one being pied. This other one is not lavender. The lighting is not good so I can't tell what it is but the head stripes are not right. Coral blue looks similar to lavender except with wavy head lines (lavender has head line patterns like pearl), though the keet looks more along the lines of buff or something but it could be the lighting

Thanks! I can't figure that one out to save my life. I have one that is indeed lavender, and when this one hatched it looked to be the same color, just with a lot of white and the pattern really broken up. Now, though, they are not looking so similar. I can get a shot of it and the lavender together if you think it would help.

And congrats on your hatch! They are so cute.

I do, just hatched them ten days ago. I sold two to another member on here that lives not far from me but I'm holding on to the rest until I can sex them because I would hate to sell them and then hold on to two that end up being roos lol.

Here are some right after hatch

All came out white or yellow except this little bandit

Here are the eggs that they came from next to one of my tinted Japanese bantam eggs:

And here are some of them with two of the foster moms

I'll have to get updated pictures so you can see how they are feathering. Here is a picture of the two that I sold, taken yesterday. All but the dark one look similar so far:

These were shipped eggs and I had pretty good luck with them, with 9/14 hatching. They came to me from Kentucky, if I recall correctly. The d'Uccles were also shipped, and I have some shipped guineas and Cream Legbars coming along nicely as well.

Lovely! Thank you for the pics!!

A couple pics of my self-blue OEGB's

I was really worried about one that was having trouble pooping, but I think I finally got it cleared out, and I think she's going to be ok. So glad I didn't have to cull her..

I love them! I had one but she died about a week after I got her. I still have a partridge looking one but the blues are much prettier. She does make a GREAT broody, though.

My ducklings are hatching early. Last night when I locked them down I had some internal pips already and today when I grabbed two eggs out to slip into my pekin's nest while she was up I had external pips too. Nothing yet on the pea eggs but they're not really due until Saturday so I'm not worried yet.

Hey guys so I know I told you I woke up to 2 external pips. Today is day 19. One was a wrong end pipper. I noticed a little blood but not to bad.it's been all day and it looked like it was trying to make the hole bigger but it started bleeding quite a bit. I peeled back some of the shell and applied cornstarch until the bleeding stopped. Chick is still moving about so I know it's ok. I decider to remove some of the shell so I could keep an eye on the veins which at this pint still look heavy. After removing some of the shell I noticed it has an unabsorbed yolk. It's still in the shell covered by the inner membrane. I've never seen this before. Is it because it's early? By the time the veins recede will the yolk be absorbed? I have it in the second incubator by itself so the others can't hurt it when they start hatching. What would you all do in this situation?

He's still got a lot of time left. Just give him time and he should absorb the yolk. He probably would have taken at least another full day to hatch if he had pipped correctly - he likely would have internally pipped, waited 24 hours, externally pipped, waited another 24-ish hours, and then finished up. So he may have quite a bit of absorbing time left ahead of him, maybe a full day or more.
